Gordon Claims Career Win Number 62
Jeff Gordon claimed career victory number 62 on Sunday, winning the Virginia 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Gordon passed Bobby Labonte with 13 laps to go and held on to claim his first win of the season. Gordon led 190 of the event’s 500 laps, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the most laps on the day, staying out in front of the field for 195 circuits. The race would end under the caution flag, with Gordon at the head of the field. Labonte, who won this event last season, came home in the second spot. Earnhardt finished in the third position, to score his third straight top-three finish and moved ever closer to the Winston Cup point lead, trailing Matt Kenseth by 51 points. The Fords of Jeff Burton and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top five behind the three Chevrolets.
Gordon Wins Martinsville Pole
Jeff Gordon will lead the field to the green flag at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday after winning the pole position for the Virginia 500. Gordon qualified in 20.079 seconds, at an average speed of 94.308 mph, to best the field by .095 seconds. The pole is the 43rd career top starting position for Gordon, his third at Martinsville. Dale Earnhardt Jr., last week’s winner at Talladega, will start alongside Gordon on the front row in the second position. Ryan Newman, who has started third or better in six of the last seven races, will start from the third spot, while Ken Schrader and Rusty Wallace round out the top five in the lineup.
