Sirius Satellite Radio 400 - Michigan International Speedway
Busch Wins at MIS
Kurt Busch capped off Ford’s Centennial Celebration in grand style by posting his third win of the 2003 season in the Sirius Satellite 400 at Michigan International Speedway. With Ford in the midst of a four-day festival to mark its 100th anniversary, Busch won for the seventh time in his career. Busch now leads the Winston Cup series in wins, as he became the first driver to reach the three win mark. Busch took the lead 24 laps from the end of the race and held on to win by .744 seconds over pole sitter Bobby Labonte. Labonte’s runner-up effort gives him six finishes of third or better in his last seven races. Jeff Gordon came home in third, while Matt Kenseth, the series points leader, finished fourth. Kenseth extended his points lead to 185 points over Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished seventh. Sterling Marlin led the most laps on the day, staying out front for 102 of the event’s 200 laps, and ended the day in the fifth position.
Labonte on Michigan Pole Position
Last weekend at Pocono, the Joe Gibbs Racing teammates started side-by-side on row two, this week they both move up a row. Bobby Labonte will start the Sirius Satellite Radio 400 at Michigan International Speedway from the pole position while Tony Stewart will start on the outside of row one from the outside pole. Labonte qualified in 37.822 seconds, at an average speed of 190.365 mph, to capture his third pole of the season and the 24th of his career. Dale Earnhardt Jr. gave Chevrolet a sweep of the top-three starting spots after qualifying third. Kurt Busch will start fourth and Terry Labonte starts fifth.
