Coca-Cola 600 - Lowe's Motor Speedway
Johnson Doubles Up at Lowe's Motor Speedway
While many people were talking about Robby Gordon’s Indy/Charlotte double, Jimmie Johnson completed a “double” of his own. One week after winning The Winston, NASCAR’s all-star race, Johnson became the fifth driver to complete a Lowe’s Motor Speedway sweep, winning both The Winston and the Coca-Cola 600. The race actually ended up the Coca-Cola 414. A heavy rain passed over the track, causing NASCAR to end the race after only 276 of the scheduled 400 laps had been completed. Johnson, who started in the back after an engine change, was at the front of the field when the rains came. For Johnson, it was the fourth victory of his brief career. Winston Cup points leader Matt Kenseth led the most laps on the night, staying at the front of the field for 75 circuits, and finished second, increasing his lead in the standings to 160 points. Bobby Labonte, who had been second for three straight weeks, came home in third, while Jimmy Spencer and polesitter Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.
Newman on Charlotte Pole
Ryan Newman will start the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway from the pole position for the second time in his career. Newman captured his first career pole two years ago at the Charlotte track. Qualifying in 29.140 seconds, at an average speed of 185.312 mph, Newman won the 10th pole of his career and the third this season. Elliott Sadler will join Newman on the front row, starting from the outside-pole position. Mike Skinner will start third, while Jeff Gordon starts fourth.
