Banquet 400 - Kansas Speedway
Newman Wins Number Eight
It was a Dodge day in Kansas City, as Ryan Newman led a trio of Dodges to the checkered flag in the Banquet 400 at Kansas Speedway. Newman was able to stretch his fuel over the closing 78 laps and hold off a very fast Bill Elliott to claim his series-leading eighth win of the season. Newman did not pit during the caution with 65 laps remaining and gambled on gas mileage to take the checkered flag for the ninth time in his career. Elliott had by far the dominant car on the day, leading a race-high 115 laps but came up .863 seconds short at the end. Elliott’s teammate Jeremy Mayfield, who stayed out with Newman with 65 laps to go, closed out a Dodge sweep of the top-three finishing positions. Tony Stewart crossed the stripe in fifth place, followed by two-time Kansas winner Jeff Gordon in fifth.
Johnson Shatters Kansas Track Record to Earn Pole
Jimmie Johnson, along with 17 other qualifiers, broke the Kansas Speedway track record to nab the pole position for the Banquet 400 on Sunday. Johnson turned in a fast qualifying lap of 29.938 seconds, at an average speed of 180.373, to shatter the track record set last season by Dale Earnhardt Jr. For Johnson, it is his second pole of the 2003 season and the sixth of his brief Winston Cup career. Mike Skinner will start from the second spot after qualifying on the outside pole. Earnhardt will start on the inside of row two in the third position, while Bobby Labonte starts fourth.
