Southern 500 - Darlington Raceway
Terry Tames the Lady in Black
Terry Labonte was the victor in the final Southern 500 run on Labor Day weekend, taking the checkered flag at Darlington Raceway… literally. After taking the win, Labonte got the checkered flag from the flag stand and took it for a victory lap around the historic track. Labonte’s pit crew was instrumental in the win, pulling off a quick pit stop under caution that allowed Labonte to take the lead on lap 335. Labonte held on for the remainder of the day to capture the 22nd win of his career, his first in 156 races. Kevin Harvick crossed the finish line in the second position for the third straight race, 1.651 seconds behind Labonte. Jimmie Johnson brought his Chevrolet home in third, while rookie Jamie McMurray and Bill Elliott rounded out the top-five positions in the finishing order.
"Pole Man" Newman Strikes Again
Ryan Newman tamed qualifying at the “Track too Tough to Tame” on Friday afternoon, winning the pole position for the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Newman qualified in 29.090 seconds, at an average speed of 169.048 mph, to earn his circuit-leading sixth pole of the season and the 13th of his career. Newman’s lap edged out the lap set by Jimmie Johnson by .032 seconds. Johnson will start from the outside-pole position, while Terry Labonte and Elliott Sadler start from row two. Sadler captured the pole in the spring race at Darlington earlier this season.
