Daytona 500 - Daytona International Speedway

Waltrip Wins Second Daytona 500
Michael Waltrip won again at the Daytona International Speedway. With an assist from Mother Nature, Michael Waltrip became a two-time winner of the “Great American Race.” Waltrip passed Jimmie Johnson on lap 106 with dark clouds threatening. Three laps later, the rain fell for the second time on the day, ultimately ending the race. Waltrip led three times for a total of 68 of the event’s 109 laps, while teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. paced the field for 22 laps. In 535 starts in his career, Waltrip has won three times, all at Daytona, and has won three of the last five events at the Daytona track. Kurt Busch, the circuit’s hottest driver at the end of the 2002 season, brought home a second-place finish, while Johnson finished third. Kevin Harvick crossed the finish line in fourth and Mark Martin came home fifth.

Gordon, Earnhardt Jr. Capture Gatorade 125s
Robby Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulled off winning performances in the Gatorade 125's on Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. In the first Gatorade 125, Gordon, driver of the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet, made his winning pass on Richard Childress Racing teammate and Daytona 500 pole winner Jeff Green on pit road thanks to a quick two-tire pit stop by his crew. In the second Gatorade 125, Dale Earnhardt Jr., driving the No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet, continued his string of success at Daytona during Speedweeks 2003 by following up last weekend's Budweiser Shootout victory with his fourth career triumph at Daytona.

Wilburn Fined $10,000, Wallace to Start 38th in 500
Billy Wilburn, crew chief for Rusty Wallace, was fined $10,000 on Friday for an illegal carburetor found during post-race inspection after Thursday’s 125-mile qualifying races. NASCAR officials disqualified Wallace’s fourth-place finish, forfeiting the $28,720 he earned for the race and forcing him to use a provisional to make the race. Wallace will start 38th on the grid for the Daytona 500. The carburetor in Wallace's Dodge did not meet the minimum size requirements.

Green Roars to Daytona Pole
Jeff Green roared to his first-ever Daytona 500 pole position, taking the top starting spot for the ‘Great American Race’ during qualifying on Monday afternoon. Green turned in a fast lap of 48.230 seconds, at an average speed of 186.606 mph, to win his second career pole. Dale Earnhardt Jr., the early favorite for the pole, will start the Daytona 500 from the outside pole position after qualifying in 48.288 seconds. Chevrolet took the top four positions as Robby Gordon and Michael Waltrip turned in fast laps. Ricky Rudd was the fastest non-Chevrolet, qualifying fifth. Only Green and Earnhardt’s starting positions are locked in, the remainder of the field will be set following the Twin 125’s on Thursday.
