MBNA Armed Forces Family 400 - Dover International Speedway
Newman Tames the Monster Mile
Ryan Newman is now heading in the right direction, straight to victory lane. After weeks of struggles and sub-par finishes, Newman finally put an end to the frustration by winning the MBNA Armed Forces Family 400 at Dover International Speedway from the pole position. Newman, who had lost his power steering earlier in the race, held off Jeff Gordon by 0.834 seconds to score his second victory of the season, becoming only the second two-time winner in 2003. Newman, last season’s rookie of the year, led the most laps on the day, staying at the front of the field for 162 of the event’s 400 laps. He now has three career Winston Cup wins. Gordon scored the runner-up spot, followed by Bobby Labonte in third. Labonte now has finished second or third for five consecutive races. Tony Stewart fought back from a one-lap penalty for pitting outside of his pit box to finish in the fourth position. Johnny Benson scored his best finish of the season, coming home fifth.
Another Pole for Newman
Ryan Newman is a qualifying machine. Newman captured the pole for the MBNA Armed Forces Family 400 at Dover International Speedway for his series-leading fourth pole position of the season and his second in a row. Newman turned in a qualifying lap of 22.682 seconds, at an average speed of 158.716 mph, to capture his 11th career pole in 57 attempts. It is the fifth pole of the season for Dodge in 2003. Newman will have a familiar face starting alongside him on the front row, Rusty Wallace grabbed the outside pole and will start second. Jeremy Mayfield qualified third, giving Dodge a sweep of the top-three starting positions. Point leader Matt Kenseth qualified in the fourth spot, while last week’s winner Jimmie Johnson will start fifth.
