Tropicana 400 - Chicagoland Speedway
Newman Breezes to Win in Windy City
Ryan Newman had enough gas to make it to the end of the day and took the checkered flag for the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Kevin Harvick, going for his third straight Chicago victory, ran out of fuel with only a handful of laps remaining while running in second place, allowing Newman to cruise to his third win of the season. Newman took the lead for good with 57 laps to go and outdistanced polesitter Tony Stewart by 3.177 seconds, making his fourth career trip to victory lane. Newman led twice for a total of 67 laps, while Stewart led the most laps in the event, pacing the field for 80 of the race’s 267 laps. Jimmie Johnson came home in third, followed by his teammate Jeff Gordon in fourth. Michael Waltrip rounded out the top five in the finishing order.
Stewart Grabs Chicago Pole Position
Tony Stewart, the defending Winston Cup champion, scored his first pole position of the season and set a new track record to boot. Stewart qualified in 29.223 seconds, at an average speed of 184.786 mph, to break Todd Bodine’s track record set in 2001 and give Stewart the pole for the Topicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. The pole is the seventh top starting spot of Tony Stewart’s career. Jeff Gordon makes out the all-Chevrolet front row, qualifying in the second position. Bill Elliott qualified in the third spot, while Casey Mears qualified fourth and gave Dodge the second row.
