Sharpie 500 - Bristol Motor Speedway
Busch Survies Bristol Crashfest to Pull Season Sweep
Kurt Busch put a tumultuous week behind him by visiting a familiar place, victory lane at Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch held off Kevin Harvick by .818 seconds, despite a failing alternator, to take the checkered flag in the Sharpie 500, becoming the first driver since Rusty Wallace in 2000 to sweep both races at Bristol. Busch has now won three of the last four races at the .533-mile bullring. The win is the fourth of the season for Busch and the eighth of his career. Busch led for 121 of the event’s 500 laps, while Jeff Gordon led the most laps on the evening, pacing the field for 179 circuits. The pace car was at the front of the field for 119 laps under a record 20 cautions. Harvick notched the runner-up position, while rookie Jamie McMurray crossed the stripe in third. Points leader Matt Kenseth continued to pad his points lead by coming home in the fourth spot, followed by Jimmy Johnson in fifth.
Gordon on Bristol Pole
Jeff Gordon won the pole position for the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon turned in a qualifying lap in 15.038 seconds, at an average speed of 127.597 mph, around the half-mile bullring to set a new event record. Gordon edged out Mark Martin for the pole by a mere .001 seconds. Martin will start from the outside pole. Gordon, who won this event last season, has now scored three poles in 2003 and 45 in his Winston Cup career. Michael Waltrip will start from the third spot while Mike Skinner qualified fourth.
