Food City 500 - Bristol Motor Speedway

Busch Wins Second Consecutive Food City 500
A bridesmaid no more. After three runner-up finishes this season, Kurt Busch finally broke through into victory lane. Busch won the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, his second consecutive win in Bristol’s spring race and first of the 2003 season. Busch passed Bobby Labonte for the lead and led the final 97 laps, winning by .39 seconds over teammate Matt Kenseth. For Busch, the victory was career win number five and boosted him into second place in the Winston Cup point standings. Kenseth’s second-place run increased his point lead to 138 points over Busch. Bobby Labonte finished third, followed by Ricky Rudd in fourth. Rookie Greg Biffle scored his career-best finish, coming home fifth, giving Roush Racing three of the top-five finishing positions. The race featured 17 cautions, three short of the record, for 120 laps.

Record-Breaking Pole for Newman at Bristol
Ryan Newman is the “Pole Man.” Last season’s leader in pole positions has scored again, this time in record-breaking fashion. Newman blistered the 0.533-mile bullring at Bristol in 14.908 seconds, for an average speed of 128.709, to attain the first lap under 15 seconds in Bristol Motor Speedway’s history. It is the second pole of the season for Newman and the ninth of his brief career. Jeff Gordon, who won the last event at Bristol, will join Newman on the front row, starting second.
