Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 - Atlanta Motor Speedway
Back-to-Back Wins for Gordon
Jeff Gordon was able to hold off a hard-charging Tony Stewart to win the rain-delayed Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway under the caution flag. Gordon took the lead for the final time on lap 277 and held on until Ryan Newman’s spin brought out a caution with three laps to go. The win is Gordon’s second consecutive trip to victory lane, after winning last weekend in Martinsville, his third of the 2003 season and the 64th of his career. Tony Stewart, who led the most laps on the day, crossed the finish line in second place after problems on his final pit stop placed him back in the field. Gordon’s teammate Jimmie Johnson finished in the third position, while hometown favorite Bill Elliott came home in fourth. Bobby Labonte, a six-time Atlanta winner, ended the day in the fifth position.
Newman Rockets to Atlanta Pole Position
The Rocket man strikes again. Ryan Newman roared to the pole position for the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway with the fastest qualifying lap of the 2003 season. Newman rocketed around the 1.54-mile quad-oval in 28.534 seconds, at an average speed of 194.294, to earn his ninth pole of the season and the 16th of his career. Bobby Labonte, who has six career wins at AMS, will join Newman on the front row after missing the pole position by .041 seconds. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will roll off from the third spot on the starting grid. Birthday boy Brain Vickers, making his second career Winston Cup start, earned the fourth starting position, while Bill Elliott starts fifth.
