The Winston - Lowe's Motor Speedway
Newman Wins The Winston
Rookie Ryan Newman was the big winner in The Winston, NASCAR's all-star race. Newman, who won the No Bull Sprint, started in the rear of the field and was out front when all was said and done after 90 laps of The Winston. Newman held off a hard-charging Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the non-points event and joins Earnhardt Jr. as the only two rookies to win the event. Earnhardt finished second, followed by pole-sitter Matt Kenseth in third. Kurt Busch came home in the fourth spot, while another rookie Jimmie Johnson, who won segments one and two on the night, rounded out the top five. Newman took home a check for $794,326 for his night's efforts.
Mayfield Wins Winston Open, Newman Takes No Bull Sprint, Both Transfer to The Winston
Jeremy Mayfield started from the pole position and led every lap on the way to the win in the Winston Open. Mayfield was never challenged in the 30-lap event, pocketing a cool $54,326 in the process. Ken Schrader finished in the runner-up spot, while Ryan Newman, Hut Stricklin, and Kyle Petty made out the top five. Mayfield will start 26th in The Winston.
In the No Bull Sprint, rookie Ryan Newman also led every lap to win the 16-lap sprint. Newman passed Jeff Green on the first lap and cruised to an easy win, gaining the 27th starting spot for The Winston. Kyle Petty finished second, followed by Ken Schrader, Hut Stricklin, and Jimmy Spencer.
Kenseth on Pole for The Winston, Mayfield on Open Pole
Matt Kenseth's pit crew performed under pressure, executing a 13-second, four-tire pit stop to propel the DeWalt Ford team to the pole position for The Winston. Kenseth made three laps and the pit stop in 112.94 seconds to easily take the top-starting spot. Michael Waltrip will start from the outside pole, followed by Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton in row two. Meanwhile, Jeremy Mayfield grabbed the pole for the Winston Open, turning a lap in 29.454 seconds, at an average speed of 183.336 mph. Jerry Nadeau, subbing for Johnny Benson, will join Mayfield on the front row, while rookie Ryan Newman and Jimmy Spencer start from the second row.
