Pennsylvania 500 - Pocono Raceway
Elliott Wins at Pocono
Bill Elliott won the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway from the pole position, scoring his first win of the season. Elliott led the last 19 laps after taking the lead from Sterling Marlin and pulled away to score his fifth career victory at Pocono and the 42nd of his career. The race was shortened to 175 laps because of darkness as a result of two red-flag situations, for guardrail repair after a crash and rain, resulting in a total of three hours and seven minutes of red-flag conditions. Kurt Busch finished 1.721 seconds behind Elliott in second place, while Marlin came home in third. The Fords of Dale Jarrett and rookie Ryan Newman finished in the top five.
Another Pole for Awesome Bill
Bill Elliott's lap of 170.508 mph gave him the No. 1 starting spot in Friday's time trials, giving him his second straight pole position and his fourth of the season. It was also Elliott's fourth career pole at Pocono and his 55th career pole in 679 starts. Elliott ranks third in the modern era with his 55 poles behind Darrell Waltrip (59) and David Pearson (57). Elliott has nine top-five qualifying runs this season and 12 top 10s. Eight of his last nine qualifying attempts ended up with top 10 starting spots and seven of those eight were top fives.
