New Hampshire 300 - New Hampshire International Speedway
Newman Wins First at New Hampshire
Rookie Ryan Newman finally broke through into the win column. Following consecutive second-place efforts, Newman scored his first career Winston Cup points victory in his 35th start. Newman captured the win in The Winston in May, the circuit's all-star race. Newman had a little help in his first win, Mother Nature was able to lend a hand. Newman took the yellow flag at lap 199 for rain and took the checkered flag eight laps later, as the rain caused an early end to the race that was scheduled for 300 laps. Kurt Busch tried every move imaginable to pass Newman before the rain came but fell short to finish in the second position. Tony Stewart scored the third spot, while Jonny Benson and Bobby Labonte rounded out the top five.
Record-Breaking Pole for Newman in Loudon
Rookie Ryan Newman broke the New Hampshire track record on Friday during qualifying for the New Hampshire 300, earning his fourth career pole position in the process. Newman toured the Loudon track in 28.802 seconds, at an average speed of 132.241 mph, for his third pole this season. Newman bested his teammate Rusty Wallace's previous track record set in July of 2000. Johnny Benson, who missed the spring race due to an injury, will start second, grabbing the outside pole. The second row will consist of Bobby Labonte and Greg Biffle, continuing to substitute for injured Bobby Hamilton.
