UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 - Las Vegas Motor Speedway

 

Marlin Wins at Las Vegas
Sterling Marlin won the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning his first race of the 2002 season. Marlin easily outran Jeremy Mayfield, who had taken only two tires on his final pit stop, to score his ninth career win and padded his lead in the Winston Cup point standings. Marlin now leads rookie Ryan Newman by 75 points in the chase for the championship. Following second-place Mayfield to the stripe was Mark Martin in the third position. Newman finished in the fourth spot while Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.

Bodine Grabs Vegas Pole
Todd Bodine set a new Las Vegas Motor Speedway track record on his way to the pole position for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400. Bodine's lap of 31.240 seconds, at an average speed of 172.849 mph, earned him his fifth career pole. Rookie Ryan Newman scored the second-starting spot, just missing the pole by .003 seconds. Kurt Busch will start from the third position while Jimmy Spencer makes out the second row.
