Protection One 400 - Kansas Speedway

Gordon Repeats at Kansas
Jeff Gordon became the only Winston Cup winner in the two-year history of Kansas Speedway, repeating his win from one year ago. Gordon, who led for 116 of 267 laps, took the checkered flag by .618 seconds ahead of rookie Ryan Newman to win for the third time this season. Gordon survived a late-race red flag that restarted the event win only three laps remaining to win the Protection One 400 and score his 61st career win. Newman would finish second for the fifth time this season. Rusty Wallace would cross the stripe behind his teammate in the third spot, followed by Joe Nemechek and Bill Elliott in the top five. Rookie Jimmie Johnson took the lead atop the Winston Cup point standings, thanks to a 10th-place finish and engine problems suffered by Mark Martin. Johnson leads Martin by 11 points heading to Talladega.
