MBNA Platinum 400 - Dover Downs International Speedway
Johnson Wins Dover Downs
"Young Gun" Jimmie Johnson claimed the second victory of this his rookie season, holding off veteran Bill Elliott to win the MBNA Platinum 400 at Dover International Speedway. Johnson beat Elliott to the stripe by .478 seconds to win for the second time in only 16 career Winston Cup starts. Johnson had a strong car all day, leading 188 of the race's 400 laps, and moved into second place in the point standings, trailing leader Sterling Marlin by 136 points. Elliott's second-place effort equaled his starting spot and was his best finish of the 2002 season. The three Fords of Jeff Burton, Ryan Newman, and Dale Jarrett rounded out the top-five finishing positions.
Kenseth Captures First Cup Pole at Dover
Matt Kenseth, driver of the #17 DEWALT Power Tools Ford Taurus, captured his first career Winston Cup Pole today at Dover International Speedway, with a speed of 154.939 mph. Kenseth topped the charts during the morning practice session and duplicated the effort on his first qualifying lap. Bill Elliott captured the second starting position for Sunday's race and will join Matt Kenseth on the front row. In 1998, Matt made his Winston Cup debut at Dover International Speedway substituting for Bill Elliott. Jerry Nadeau, Michael Waltrip, and Kurt Busch round out the top-five starting spots.
