NAPA Auto Parts 500 - California Speedway

 

Johnson Claims First Win at Fontana
After already scoring two poles this season, rookie Jimmie Johnson broke into the win column on Sunday. Johnson scored his first Winston Cup victory in only his 13th Cup start, holding off Kurt Busch to win the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California Speedway. Johnson led for 62 of the event's 250 laps and gave Chevrolet its second consecutive win. Following second-place Busch across the finish line was Ricky Rudd in third. Bill Elliott scored his best finish of the season with a fourth-place effort and Mark Martin finished fifth.

Newman on Pole at California Speedway
Rookie Ryan Newman roared to the pole position for the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California Speedway. Newman shattered the previous track record with a fast lap of 38.414 seconds, at an average speed of 187.432 mph. The pole is the second of Newman's young career. Sophomore Kurt Busch joins Newman on the front row, starting from the outside pole. Dale Jarrett, rookie Jimmie Johnson, and Michael Waltrip make out the top-five starting positions.
