Race Fans for a Cure Raises $51,458.93 for Komen Foundation; Ford Credit Matches
DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 14, 2001 - Dale and Kelley Jarrett, on behalf of the Race Fans for a Cure(tm) program sponsored by Ford Credit, will present a check for $102,917.86 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation prior to the start of the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 18. The check will be presented to Komen Foundation Board Chair Linda Kay Peterson during driver introductions.
Race Fans for a Cure(tm) - a joint initiative involving Ford Credit, Dale and Kelley Jarrett, and the Komen Foundation - received $51,458.93 in donations from race fans at various NASCAR Winston Cup events and Ford Racing Fan Appreciation Days during the 2001 season. Ford Credit matched that amount - for a total of $102,917.86 raised for the Komen Foundation this year. Last year fans donated $33,000.
"A key to our success at the Komen Foundation is that we collaborate with a variety of companies and organizations to provide creative ways for people to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer," said Peterson. "Our partnership with Ford Credit and Dale and Kelley Jarrett is a wonderful example of this collaboration. Their support brings us closer to eradicating this devastating disease."
Race Fans for a Cure(tm) is dedicated to educating race fans on the importance of the early detection of breast cancer while also raising funds to help find a cure. At the booths, fans received information about the Komen Foundation, its mission, and the three steps to early breast cancer detection. They were also able to make donations to the cause.
For a $1 donation, fans personalized pink paper ribbons to be displayed in the Race Fans for a Cure(tm) tent on Manufacturers Midway at Atlanta Motor Speedway during the race weekend. Fans also received a keepsake enamel pink ribbon pin to show their support. All fan donations went directly to the Komen Foundation to support the fight against breast cancer through funding of innovative research and community-based outreach programs.
"It's been really amazing how much the program has grown in just a year," said Phil Gordon, Ford Credit Motorsport Manager. "It seems like the more that people hear about the program, the more they want to get involved. We get e-mails through our website (www.racefansforacure.com) every day from people around the country who have been touched by the program or who just want to tell us how much they appreciate what we're doing."
Joining the Jarretts and Peterson for the check presentation will be Alan Steiger, winner of a national sweepstakes, and his father, Charles. They will represent all race fans who supported Race Fans for a Cure(tm) this year.
Fans visiting the Race Fans for a Cure(tm) display at AMS can have their picture taken in front of the ribbons and No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup show car. In addition, volunteers will be handing out copies of Jennie Nash's new book, The Victoria's Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming and Other Lessons I Learned from Breast Cancer, Race Fans for a Cure(tm) brochures and shower cards.
Since 1998 Ford Credit, associate sponsor of the No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup Taurus driven by Dale Jarrett, has donated money to the Komen Foundation for every top-three finish and pole position (for fastest qualifying time) that he collects during the season. Since its inception, Ford Credit has donated $585,000 to the Komen Foundation based on Jarrett's on track performance and end-of-season bonuses - including $92,500 this year.
