The Winston - Lowe's Motor Speedway
Gordon Wins The Winston, Again
Jeff Gordon drove a backup car to the checkered flag in The Winston at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Gordon won NASCAR's all-star race for third time, tying him with the late Dale Earnhardt for the most wins in The Winston. Rain fell as the cars took the green flag, causing several cars to wreck, including the 24 Chevrolet of Gordon. NASCAR allowed all cars involved to pull out their backup cars to compete in the event, Gordon put his in Victory Lane. Dale Jarrett crossed the finish line in second, while Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte, and Jerry Nadeau rounded out the top five. Jeremy Mayfield won the first 30-lap segment and Tony Stewart took the win in segment two.
Benson Wins Winston Open, Bodine Wins No Bull Sprint
After Ryan Newman blew an engine while leading the race, Johnny Benson cruised to victory in the Winston Open under the caution flag. Benson pockets a cool $40,000 for his first career victory in the Open and will start 20th in The Winston. Todd Bodine dominated the No Bull Sprint, leading 15 of the 16 laps to tranfer to run in The Winston for the second time in his career. Bodine will start 21st.
Wallace on Pole for The Winston
Rusty Wallace will start NASCAR's All-Star race from the pole position. Wallace and his super-fast pit crew turned in a four-tire stop and three laps in 115.337 seconds to grab the top starting spot for The Winston. The pole is the second for Wallace in the unique event. Bobby Labonte will start second, while rookie Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart start from row two. Johnny Benson grabbed the pole for the Winston Open, turning in a qualifying lap in 29.792 seconds, at an average speed of 181.257 mph. Ryan Newman will join Benson on the front row, followed by Todd Bodine and Ricky Craven.
