Pontiac Excitement 400 - Richmond International Raceway

 

Stewart Wins at Richmond
Tony Stewart survived a two-lap shootout to take the checkered flag for the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Stewart, who led the series in wins last season, won for the first time in 2001 and gave Pontiac its first victory of the season. Stewart led for 93 of the event's 400 laps to win for the tenth time in his career. Jeff Gordon crossed the line in second, followed in third by Rusty Wallace, who led the most laps on the night, staying out front for 276 laps. The cars of Steve Park and Ricky Rudd rounded out the top five.

Martin Takes Pole at Richmond
Mark Martin raced to his third career pole position at Richmond International Raceway, edging Rusty Wallace for the top starting spot for the Pontiac Excitement 400. Martin turned a qualifying lap in 124.613 seconds, at an average speed of 21.667 mph, to claim his second pole of the 2001 season. Wallace will start second, followed by Ricky Rudd, Steve Park, and Jimmy Spencer in the top five.
