Checker Auto Parts 500 - Phoenix International Raceway
Burton Wins Back-to-Back at Phoenix
Jeff Burton completed a Roush Racing weekend sweep at Phoenix International Raceway. After Greg Biffle captured the Truck and Busch races on Friday and Saturday, Burton won the Checker Auto Parts 500 on Sunday. Burton held off Mike Wallace by 2.857 seconds to win his second race in a row at Phoenix. Burton led for 97 of the event's 312 circuits to win for the second time this season. Wallace led for 45 laps on the day and scored his highest Winston Cup finish, coming home in second. Ricky Rudd finished in the third spot, followed by Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart in the top five. Point-leader Jeff Gordon finished sixth and now leads Rudd by 380 points with four races remaining.
Atwood Captures First Pole at Phoenix
Rookie Casey Atwood won his first Winston Cup pole position, grabbing the top-starting spot for the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Atwood qualified in 27.419 seconds, at an average speed of 131.296 mph, to become the fourth rookie to win a pole this season. John Andretti qualified on the outside-pole to make out the all-Dodge front row. Jeff Burton will start from the third spot, followed by Rusty Wallace and Robert Pressley in the top five.
