Kmart 400 - Michigan International Speedway
Gordon Gives Hendrick 100th Win
Jeff Gordon continued his hot streak, winning his second race in a row, again in dominating fashion. Gordon led for 143 of the event's 200 laps to win the Kmart 400 at Michigan, giving Hendrick Motorsports their 100th trip to victory lane. Gordon survived a late-race charge by Ricky Rudd to edge the 28 by .085 seconds at the finish line to score his 55th career win, giving him seventh place on NASCAR's all-time win list. With the win, Gordon grabs the top spot above the Winston Cup point standings, leading Dale Jarrett by 26 points. Sterling Marlin brought his Dodge home in third, while the Fords of Jeremy Mayfield and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.
Gordon on Roll, Takes Michigan Pole
After dominating last week's race at Dover Downs, Jeff Gordon continued his hot streak by grabbing the pole position for the Kmart 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Gordon turned in a qualifying lap of 38.247 seconds, at an average speed of 188.250 mph, to edge Ricky Rudd for the top spot. The pole is the fourth of the year for Gordon, his third at MIS, and the 36th of his career. Rudd will join Gordon on the front row, starting from the second spot, while Mike Skinner and Dave Blaney make out the second row.
