Brickyard 400 - Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Gordon Wins Another Brickyard 400
Jeff Gordon celebrated his 30th birthday in style, in Victory Lane at Indianapolis. Gordon, who turned 30 on Saturday, claimed his third win at the Brickyard, the 56th win of his career. Gordon also won at Indy in 1994 and 1998. Gordon led 29 of the event's 160 laps and won for the fourth time this season. Sterling Marlin chased Gordon at the end and settled for second, while Johnny Benson, Rusty Wallace, and rookie Kurt Busch rounded out the top five.
Spencer Grabs Brickyard Pole
It appears that Haas Carter Motorsports has turned into a qualifying machine. Jimmy Spencer grabbed the pole position for the Brickyard 400, giving the Haas Carter team three of the last four poles. Spencer was clocked at 50.093 seconds, at an average speed of 179.666 mph, to give him his first top-starting spot since September of 1994 and the second pole of his career. Bill Elliott "nosed" his Dodge to the outside pole, his best starting position since his pole at Daytona. Elliott's teammate Casey Atwood will start from the third spot, while Ricky Rudd and Ryan Newman round out the top five, giving Ford three of the top-five starting spots.
