UPS to Sponsor 88 in 2001

ATLANTA - Nov 17, 2000 - UPS announced today it will sponsor the no.88 Robert Yates Racing Ford driven by NASCAR 1999 Winston Cup Series Champion Dale Jarrett.

The official delivery company of NASCAR will link its entry into the 2001 Winston Cup season with aggressive on- and off-track programs for UPS customers and employees, capitalizing on the growing popularity of NASCAR.

"This aligns UPS with one of NASCAR's most successful teams," said Rosemary Windsor, vice president of UPS Event Sponsorship. "Dale, Robert and the no. 88 Team effectively link UPS brand characteristics of speed, precision and technology with what we know will be a strong performance on the track."

Jarrett, who has 24 career victories to his credit, including this year's Daytona 500, was on hand with Windsor and team owner, Robert Yates, as the new no. 88 UPS Ford Taurus was publicly unveiled for the first time at the Atlanta Motor Speedway as qualifying began for Sunday's NAPA 500. Jarrett met yesterday morning with UPS Atlanta-area employees after local UPS driver Ken Bouland secured a signature for the special race car "package" that emerged from the back of a familiar brown UPS vehicle before the morning dispatch.

The public will see the new car and uniform design in ads that appear on Sunday's race telecast to kick off an advertising campaign with Jarrett that will continue with the 2001 racing season.

"Having the UPS shield on the hood of my car means a great deal to me and everyone associated with the no. 88 team," Jarrett said. "We're representing a lot of people - 358,000 UPS employees - and we take that very seriously. That's an incredible fan base to have and try to please, but we're excited about the challenge and the growth of our relationship with UPS employees across America and around the world."

Windsor added that "UPS is tapping into the passion that fans feel for Dale and his team while building programs to deliver something new to the sport and expand UPS services to the racing sector of the automotive supply chain."

"Selecting a sponsor is the most important off-track move we make in this business. UPS is renowned for reliability and commitment to both its customers and employees," Yates said. "It's very gratifying to have my name associated with a company of that caliber and character."

Today's announcement marks the third significant NASCAR-related sponsorship deal by the Atlanta-based company this year. In February UPS became an official status partner with NASCAR and in July applied the familiar shield logo as associate sponsor of the no. 28 Texaco/Havoline Ford Taurus driven by Jarrett's teammate Ricky Rudd. The Rudd associate sponsorship also will continue next year.

Jarrett, 43, resides in his hometown of Hickory, N.C., with wife Kelley and their three children. Jarrett's oldest son Jason, who drives in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Division, also lives in Hickory.

Dale Jarrett is the son of legendary NASCAR driver Ned Jarrett. The Jarretts, along with Lee and Richard Petty, are one of only two father-son combinations to win championships in NASCAR's elite series.

UPS (NYSE: UPS) is the world's largest express carrier and package delivery company, serving more than 200 countries and territories with 358,000 employees worldwide. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., the company resides on the Web at http://www.ups.com.
