The Winston - Charlotte

Earhardt Jr. Tames The Winston
Dale Earnhardt Jr. became the first-ever rookie to win The Winston, NASCAR's All-Star race. Earnhardt Jr. used a late-race pit stop for four new tires to blow by Dale Jarrett with one lap to go to take the checkered flag and a $515,000 paycheck. The new tires were key, as Earnhardt Jr. was 4.922 mph faster than Jarrett at the finish line and won by 1.295 seconds. Bill Elliott, who started the event from the pole position, won the first two 30-lap segments of The Winston.
