Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 - Richmond International Raceway
Gordon Wins Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond
Jeff Gordon took the checkered flag under the lights at Richmond International Raceway, winning for the 52nd time in his career. Gordon was able to hold off a hard-charging Dale Earnhardt, who had four fresh tires, to win by .744 seconds. The win is the third of the season for Gordon. With his second-place finish, Earnhardt moved into second place in the point standings, 158 points behind Bobby Labonte, who finished 15th.
Burton Takes Richmond Pole
Who says that Jeff Burton is not a good qualifier? After capturing the outside pole for the Busch Grand National event earlier in the day, Burton won his first Winston Cup pole position since 1996. Burton toured the New Hampshire track in 21.466 seconds, at an average speed of 125.780 mph, to claim only the second pole in his career. Point leader Bobby Labonte will start beside of Burton on the front row, while Jerry Nadeau and Rick Mast start from the second row.
