Labonte Wins First at Darlington
Bobby Labonte claimed the victory in the rain-shortened Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Rain was a factor all day, halting the event for two hours and seven minutes after 37 laps, and then slowing the race later under a yellow-flag period. Finally, after six hours and 17 minutes, rain ended the action in a watery mess on lap 328, with Labonte out front. The win is the first-ever for Labonte at Darlington and his third of the 2000 season.

Mayfield Takes Pole Position at Darlington
Jeremy Mayfield grabbed his second pole position of the season, taking the top starting spot for the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Mayfield circled the historic track in 29.022 seconds, at an average speed of 169.444, to take his fourth career pole. Johnny Benson will start from the outside pole, while Ward Burton and Mike Skinner round out the second row.
