The racing bloodlines run deep in Robert Pressley's family. Many
consider the second-generation driver to be one of the stars of the
sport's next decade.
During his rookie NASCAR Winston Cup season in 1995, Robert did
nothing to change those beliefs. With just three NASCAR Winston Cup
starts under his belt before the start of the season, Pressley took over
the Skoal-sponsored ride vacated by Harry Gant's retirement and battled
with Ricky Craven for the MAXX Rookie of the Year title throughout the
season.
The outcome was in doubt until the final race of the year, when, after his
Chevrolet suffered engine problems, Robert finished 41st, handing the
prestigious crown to the New Englander.
Pressley worked with the No. 33 and the No. 29 in 1996 and 1997,
before finishing the year in a seat that looked like a near-perfect fit, that
of the No. 77 Jasper Engines & Transmissions team. He quickly
demonstrated his ability to find the car's comfort zone, placing it in the
field when qualifying had troubled the operation earlier in the season.
Pressley is the son of short-track ace Bob Pressley, who has plied his
trade throughout the Southeast for more than 20 years. Now, Robert is mastering
the art at the premier level of stock car racing.
Pressley was a dominant force at short tracks near his home in
Asheville, N.C., winning track championships at New Asheville
Speedway and Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway before forming a
NASCAR Busch Series team co-owned by Cleveland Cavaliers center
Brad Daugherty.
He spent several years on the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division circuit before
moving up to the Winston Cup Series in 1995.
With just three races under his belt, Pressley was hand picked to take
over the Skoal-sponsored ride vacated by Harry Gant's retirement. He finished a
close second to Ricky Craven for the 1995 MAXX Rookie-of-the-Year title.
Pressley finished the 1996 season behind the wheel of the Cartoon Network Chevrolet,
after leaving the Skoal Team in the latter stages of the year. Pressley joined the
Jasper Motorsports team in Loudon, New Hampshire this past fall. His best finish of
the year came in Rockingham, NC in the AC Delco 400, landing him a full-time ride in the
#77 Jasper Engines & Transmission's Ford.
