Frigid Friday Does Not Deter IROC Drivers

Daytona Beach, Fla. (February 11, 2005) - Frigid temperatures on Friday did not deter the Crown Royal International Race of Champions drivers from lengthy practice sessions at Daytona International Speedway. Series competitors Steve Kinser and Danny Lasoski representing the World of Outlaws, NASCAR champion representatives, Kurt Busch, Bobby Hamilton and Martin Truex, and Grand American Road Course champion Max Papis all braved the chill.

"The engines enjoy the crisp cool air more so than we do," said IROC chief, Jay Signore. "Temperatures have been ranging in the mid-seventies all week up until this morning when we woke up to 35-degree weather. Most of the direction we're going in with the cars right now won't be affected too much by the temperature change."

Crown Royal IROC test drivers, Dave Marcis, Jim and Jay Sauter joined in, when needed, to keep a four-car draft happening. "You need at least four cars running to simulate a drafting situation and we need that in order to get drivers like Max (Papis) as familiar as we can with that element," said Jim Sauter. "Even for the NASCAR guys, and Danny (Lasoski) and Steve (Kinser) who have been in (IROC) a few times, it's important to spend time in the cars. Things change every year and the IROC cars are different enough from what everyone is used to and they need some time in the seat to get it figured out."

Truex, who took his first laps in the IROC cars, ran a full race segment in a tight draft. "It's fun and the cars are good, " said Truex. "We could have used six-cars out there today." Signore said, "I can remember when we only had two practice cars, then we went to three, and now we're at four. It's all- good for the series, and for the race. We want all the drivers as experienced and comfortable as possible."
