IROC Series Jam-Packed with Action

Daytona Beach, FL (Feb. 6, 2003) - The one-hour morning practice session at Daytona International Speedway for The True Value IROC Series was jam-packed with nonstop track activity.

Another speed run session with all the racecars and more practice for the series' competitors had pit road looking like a True Value IROC parking lot for the entire session.

Competitors getting seat time during this morning's session were World of Outlaws drivers, Danny Lasoski, Steve Kinser and the 2002 NASCAR Busch champion, Greg Biffle.

The test drivers, Dave Marcis, Jim Sauter, Dick Trickle, and Andy Hillenburg repeated yesterday's hop-in, hop-out routine of speed testing all 13-race cars in succession.

Throughout the equalization process, in addition to the driver's right foot and the stopwatch, the tire pyrometer and air pressure gauge are very critical in determining how similar each car is handling.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company engineer, Graham Gatt has been assisting and advising IROC tire-technicians, Tim King and Kory Smith when comparing temperatures and pressures among the tire sets. The tire data relays exactly how each car is traveling over the surface of the racetrack, and can indicate an existing, or potential mechanical problem. In many instances, the data will confirm a driver's comments on how the car is handling. All 13-tire sets are aired with a digital pressure gauge to ensure accuracy and identical pressures, which are recommended by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. All the tire sets on the racecars are matched according to mileage.

As for the speed run, the report after the morning session was that only minor tweaks would be necessary to get the field of racecars where they need to be for the race on Friday, Feb. 14. And, as for the Goodyear Eagle Radial tire data . . . Graham Gatt was smiling.

The next True Value IROC practice at Daytona is scheduled for Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ryan Newman is expected to take his first practice laps in the IROC cars at Daytona during the Friday morning session.
