Kenseth Stomps the Competition at Bristol
Matt Kenseth done a little Bristol stompin’ on Saturday night, only Kenseth stomped the field in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth put on a clinic in domination, winning from the pole position and never getting passed by any car on the track on his way to his first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup victory this season. With the win, Kenseth, the 2003 Cup Series Champion, broke a 57-race winless streak. His last victory came at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March of the 2004 season. This was also Kenseth’s first win in 12 career races at the .533-mile Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth led the most laps for the second time in a race this season, he also led the most at Chicagoland (176 of 267 laps,) pacing the field nine times for a total of 415 laps, the most laps that he has led in a single race in his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup career. Kenseth also led more laps in tonight’s short-track race than he had led in his first 33-race career short-track races (271 laps). The second-place lap leader lead only 27 laps on the night. Although Kenseth dominated the event, there was a little excitement in the finish as the race would end with only two laps remaining, or a green-white-checkered finish, after Kyle Petty’s accident in turn two on lap 495. But Kenseth still couldn’t be touched and pulled away to a 0.511-second win, scoring his 10th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup victory in his 208th career start. This was Kenseth’s second victory in 34 career short-track races. Kenseth now becomes the 11th different race winner in the 2005 season. Kenseth scored the seventh victory for car owner Jack Roush at Bristol Motor Speedway, this was Roush’s 84th victory as a car owner and ninth in 20 races this season. Kenseth becomes the fourth Roush Racing driver to win a points paying race this season, joining Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards, Mark Martin won the non-points NEXTEL All-Star event. With the win, Kenseth climbed from 15th to 11th in the NEXTEL Cup point standings, now 622 behind first-place Tony Stewart and just 11 behind 10th-place Jeff Gordon. Jeff Burton had an impressive run, coming home in the runner-up position, his ninth top-10 finish in 24 races at Bristol Motor Speedway and his best finish of the season. Greg Biffle finished third, posting his third top-10 finish in six races at Bristol and his 13th top-10 finish in 2005. Historically strong at Bristol, Ricky Rudd pocketed a fourth-place finish, his 31st top-10 finish in 56 races at Bristol, while Rusty Wallace’s “Last Call” produced a fifth place effort, his 29th top-10 finish in 44 races at Bristol. Jimmie Johnson and Biffle clinched a spot in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup this week while Wallace will secure a spot in the Chase next weekend at California simply by starting the race.
Stewart Surges to Strong Bristol Finish
If there ever was a race track that could derail Tony Stewart's summer hot streak it would be Bristol Motor Speedway. The tight and fast .533-mile bullring is known for humbling those who race within its tight confines. And even with five wins in eight races and nine straight top-10 finishes entering Saturday night's Sharpie 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race, Stewart and the #20 Home Depot Racing Team knew that Bristol posed as a potential pitfall.

As a result, Junior improves one spot to 15th in the point standings and is now 117 points out of 10th with two races to go before the Chase for the Championship.

Newman "Reigns" in Bristol, Scores Third Straight NBS Win
Ryan Newman reigns in the rains at Thunder Valley. Bristol Motor Speedway has a nickname of Thunder Valley for a reason but not for the reason we saw on Friday evening when the thunder brought rain, and plenty of it, (and something else brought 12 cautions) but through it all, Ryan Newman emerged as the victor of the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway, his third successive Busch win. Pole sitter Kyle Bush led the first 63 laps until Reed Sorenson brought out the night’s third caution when he spun in turn four on lap 63. While the race was still under caution, the rain hit the track and the first of two red flags was shown, stopping the race on lap 72, the delay lasted a total of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 12 seconds. Once the race finally resumed on lap 86, David Stremme had the lead but once lap 140 came rolling around Newman was in the lead and looking very comfortable there. On lap 164, the second red flag would fly, stopping the event for the second time for a total of 26 minutes and 10 seconds, pushing the red-flag delay total to one hour, 58 minutes and 22 seconds. For the remainder of the race nothing changed up front, except the fact that Newman’s No. 39 Dodge grew wider and wider even as faster cars tried but could not pass him. It seemed that the caution flags would fall at the end just when Newman’s competitors were mounting a charge to pass him and that was what he needed to continue his streak and score a 0.273-second win, his fourth NASCAR Busch Series victory. His streak started at Watkins Glen and continued last week at Michigan. Newman led the most laps in the event, including leading the final 112 laps. Six drivers have won three NASCAR Busch Series races in a row seven times. The last driver to accomplish the feat was Dale Earnhardt Jr. in June, 1999 at Dover, South Boston and Watkins Glen. The series record is four in a row set by Sam Ard in 1983; Ard also won three straight in 1984. Greg Biffle finished in the second position and was frustrated with all of the late-race caution flags, while Kevin Harvick in third place shared the same feelings. Clint Bowyer was the highest-finishing series regular with a fourth-place finish and Johnny Sauter rounded out the top five.
Kenseth Grabs Bud Pole at Bristol Motor Speedway
Matt Kenseth pulled a surprise out of the hat and won the pole position for Saturday night’s Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth was the 47th of 49 qualifiers to go out and knocked Jeff Gordon from the Bud Pole with a qualifying lap of 15.073 seconds, at an average speed of 127.300 mph. This is only Kenseth’s second career Bud Pole in 208 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races. His other Bud Pole was at Dover in May 2002, 119 races ago. This is Kenseth’s fourth top-10 start in 10 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth now becomes the 15th different Bud Pole winner this season. Kenseth gives Ford its fourth pole in 2005 and second in the past four races. Chevrolet has 10 Bud Poles and Dodge has eight. There have been 10 different Bud Pole winners in the last 14 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Bristol Motor Speedway, but only three in the past eight. Jeff Gordon (four), Ryan Newman (two) and Rusty Wallace (two) are the repeat Bud Pole winner in the 14-race period. Jeff Gordon posted the second-quickest qualifying lap of 15.085 seconds, at an average speed of 127.199 mph – and will join Kenseth on the front row for the Sharpie 500. This is Gordon’s 23rd top-10 start in his 26 races at Bristol. It is his eighth straight top-five start here. Dave Blaney qualified third, posting his third top-10 start in 10 races at Bristol. He started second here in the spring race this season and eighth in the spring of 2001. Greg Biffle will start fourth while Ricky Rudd will roll off fro the fifth position. Forty-eight races at Bristol have been won from the first four starting positions (54 percent). The furthest back in the field that a Bristol race winner has started was 38th by Elliott Sadler in the 2001 Food City 500.
Busch on Bristol Busch Pole
Kyle Busch won the Busch Pole for tonight’s Food City 250 at the bull ring better known as Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet that he drove to a runner-up finish in the Busch Series championship battle last season, turned in a qualifying lap of 15.301 seconds, at an average speed of 125.404 mph, to capture his first pole position of the season and the sixth of his career. Martin Truex Jr., defending champion and present points leader, will join Busch on the front row after he qualified on the outside pole. Ryan Newman, who will be gunning for his third consecutive Busch Series win, will be starting third, while Greg Biffle and Paul Menard finish out the top five in the starting grid.
