Harvick Races to a Fourth-Place Finish at Watkins Glen
“We had a good Camping World Chevrolet,” said Harvick. “The guys worked hard all day, but we just came up a little short at the end. I appreciate RCR letting the No. 29 get a little extra practice for Sunday’s Cup race by pitting our car and Shane Wilson for calling a good race.”
Once the green flag waved and the race was underway, Harvick settled into the top 10. The first caution flag waved on lap 13 and Harvick quickly radioed crew chief Shane Wilson the car was a little tight in areas, but not bad. With pit strategies beginning to take place, Wilson made the call to bring Harvick down pit road for fuel and an air-pressure adjustment and four fresh tires to help with the handling of the car. Harvick restarted on lap 15 in the 12th position.
Continuing to run fast laps comparable to the leaders, Harvick moved into the fifth spot when the caution flag waved on lap 42. With teams on various pit and fuel strategies, Wilson again brought Harvick down pit road for fuel and four fresh tires. Not able to make it to the end of the race on fuel, Wilson brought Harvick back down pit road on lap 47 under green-flag conditions to top off with fuel, placing Harvick in 28th position.
By lap 55, with many teams having to pit for fuel, Harvick was able to take over the seventh position. Maintaining his place in the top 10, Harvick was able to gain a few more positions to cross the finish line in fourth place. The finish marked Harvick’s fifth top-10 in five Nationwide Series starts at the track, including one win in last year’s event.
