After a Strong Start, Gale Earns 19th-Place Finish at Michigan
“Our Camping World Chevrolet was honestly really good all day,” said Gale. “We ran in the top 10 most of the day, but we just don’t have the finish to show it. It’s frustrating, we started good, qualified on the outside pole and ran good for three-quarters of the race, but got caught in one of those racing deals. We’ll go to Bristol now and try to capitalize there.”
Starting on the outside of pole sitter Carl Edwards, Gale settled in to the fifth position by lap 10 and ran in the top 10 for most of the race.
The No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet started off a little tight, but turned loose after the first pit stop and first round of adjustments. Crew chief Ernie Cope made the call for Gale to stay out under the second caution on lap 52 and the team restarted in the fourth position on lap 57.
Continuing to run laps competitive with the leaders and again opting to stay out under the third caution on lap 60, Gale was scored in 10th place on lap 85.
With teams on varying pit strategies, Cope made the call to bring Gale down pit road for his final stop on lap 87 while running in the 10th position for four fresh tires and fuel. Following the green-flag stop, Gale was scored one lap down in the 23rd position on lap 88. Unfortunately, the caution came out on lap 91 before pit stops cycled through the field, catching the Camping World team one lap down and in the 22nd position.
Continuing to run fast laps, the team hoped to become the beneficiary of the lucky dog award, but was unable to get the break needed when the race continued under green. Gale finished the race in the 19th position.
