Ambrose, Kingsford Ford Run Out of Luck at Monster Mile

DOVER, Del. – Dover International Speedway earned the nickname the “Monster Mile” for a reason. Unfortunately for Marcos Ambrose and the No. 59 Kingsford with Hickory Ford, Saturday’s Heluva Good! 200 was a first-hand lesson.

Ambrose blew a right-front tire and smacked the wall, sending JTG Racing to a 30th-place finish. The team qualified 12th, then sat through a three-hour delay after two thunderstorms rolled through the area. That washed away the rubber and traction from the concrete racing surface. It also created a myriad of questions as every NASCAR Nationwide Series team suddenly had to deal with cooler, damp conditions.

Ambrose was battling with defending IRL Indy Car Series champion Dario Franchitti for position when the tire exploded, sending his car into the outside wall and out of the race.

“We just blew a right-front,” Ambrose said. “We were the lucky dog fighting hard there with Dario, having a pretty good time. But it wasn’t lucky for the Kingsford car. We were the lucky dog, looking pretty good, but it got too tight and blew a right-front.”

Crew chief Gary Cogswell said the changing conditions made it difficult to keep up with the adjustments. The crew was prepared to make an adjustment during the final pit stop to help propel Ambrose to a possible Top-10 finish.

“Marcos did an incredible job keeping the car in position to be the lucky dog,” Cogswell said. “We were trying to buy time until we could make our final adjustments. Everyone was thrown for a loop by the weather. The cars were so sensitive to any adjustment early in the race, but we felt like we had a pretty good handle on it for the second half.

“It’s a shame we blew the tire. Dover is a tough place on tires. It’s even tougher when you hit one of their walls. This time, the Monster got us. But we’ll be back.”

“The good thing is you don’t have to wait long to turn things around,” Ambrose said. “We’ll put this race behind us and get things rolling at Nashville.”

  • Ambrose is 15th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings with two Top-10 finishes in 14 starts for JTG Racing, five points ahead of teammate Kelly Bires.
  • Denny Hamlin won the Heluva Good! 200 at the Dover International Speedway. Pole-winner Carl Edwards was second, followed by David Stremme in third, David Reutimann in fourth and Greg Biffle in fifth.
  • The Federated Auto Parts 300 is next Saturday night at 7:30 at the Nashville Superspeedway.
