Coleman’s Day Spoiled Near Race End

(Talladega, Ala.) April 28, 2008 – After running well for most of the day, Brad Coleman and the No. 27 USPS Ford Fusion team felt sure of a Top 10 finish as they neared the final stretch of the Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway, but an unfortunate incident sealed their fate with 29 laps to go.

Qualifying 16th, Coleman felt good about the way the No. 27 USPS Ford was running on the superspeedway and knew he had a car that would be competitive on the high banking of the track.

By lap 39, Coleman proved his team had the ability to compete with the best of them. With the help of the No. 32 car driven by Denny Hamlin, Coleman was pushed to the front of the field and notched the first lead lap for the No. 27.

“The Ford Fusion just felt powerful,” said Coleman. “Being out there running at the front was a good confidence booster for the team. Actually, our car was better in front than it was behind the draft because we could not get it to suck up tight to lead cars, so I was just running most of the race where I felt it was safe and waiting to make my move. I have no idea how we avoided some of those earlier wrecks, but we did and were in position to have a great finish.”

Coleman’s string of good luck at Talladega was abruptly ended when the No. 81 car spun in front of him on lap 88. Braking hard to avoid the spinning car, Coleman flatted his rear tires and slid down the high banks causing front end fender damage. Even though he missed the No. 81, he had to pit for repairs. After the stop, he returned to the race a lap down, but still in contention for a solid Top 15 finish. Four laps later, a broken rotor and flat right side tire put him behind the wall to stay.

Despite a finish in 24th place, Coleman displayed his racing maturity with smart driving, patience and competitive persistence throughout the race.

Crew chief Shawn Parker noted “I was impressed with the way Brad handled the No. 27 USPS Ford Fusion through the masses of tangled cars. We are really beginning to click as a team and are eager for Brad and the No. 27 to make a complete delivery.”
