O'Reilly Challenge - Rookie Post-Race Quotes

BRAD KESELOWSKI IN THE No. 88 U.S. NAVY CHEVROLET WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS ROOKIE IN TODAY’S RACE.

NOTES:

  • Keselowski finished sixth, his best effort in 32 NASCAR Busch Series races. He collected his fifth top-10 finish of the 2007 season and grabbed top Raybestos Rookie honors for the fifth time in 25 races.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Today’s race is the third consecutive event where at least one Raybestos Rookie has finished sixth or better.
  • DID YOU KNOW? A Raybestos Rookie has scored a top-10 finish in all three O’Reilly Challenge races (fall events) at Texas Motor Speedway. The others:
    2005: Carl Edwards, third
    2005: Reed Sorenson, fourth
    2006: Todd Kluever, 10th

KESELOWSKI: “I knew we had a strong car for today and probably had a top-five car, just needed some more laps. I’m real proud of everyone. This is the best car I’ve had here at JR Motorsports and is the best U.S. NAVY Chevrolet I’ve drove. This is my best finish. I’d have liked to have got a top-five but we’ll take what we can get and move on.” DURING THE LAST 60-LAP RUN YOU WERE CLOSE TO CATCHING MATT KENSETH. “I’d catch up to him and start to push and then fall back and catch-up. It was a constant cycle there with the air. We were just a little too tight there at the end but did what we thought we needed to do if there were short runs like these races usually do and it didn’t. Just didn’t catch the breaks in some ways but having strong cars, that makes me feel good and we had that today.” THIS TEAM APPEARS TO BE GETTING BETTER EVERY WEEK. “Exactly. That’s exactly what I would say, just stronger every week. They keep giving me better racecars and we keep running better. I’m just really proud of that and proud of everyone on the U.S. NAVY Chevrolet. We just needed some more laps. If we could have had another hundred laps maybe we could have had something to win the race but it just didn’t work out. I’m just proud of everyone and the racecar they gave me today. They keep giving me more U.S. NAVY Chevrolets like this we’ll go out and win some races.” WAS YOUR CAR TIGHT DURING THAT LAST RUN? “Yeah, it just got tight. It was a good car, I just had ‘em do some things to tighten it up and that wasn’t the right move. I thought we’d get some short runs and that would pay dividends and it just didn’t work out. Still, a strong car and we were still coming there at the end. I’m happy about that.”

TONY EURY SR., CREW CHIEF, No. 88 U.S. NAVY CHEVROLET: “I’m real happy. We had a good top-five car. We finished sixth but real happy with the car. We started in the back and worked our way up through there. Brad did a good job today.” THIS TEAM CONTINUES TO IMPROVE EACH WEEK. “You know, this was a brand new car that I had built when I went there. They had a brand new chassis sitting there and we killed that car at California then we killed another car at Kansas so I wanted to start a car like I was familiar with. This car, we got it done and decided we were going to run it here. We worked hard, got it in the wind tunnel, blew it, seen what we had and brought it here. We’re real happy with it, run real good.” HOW MUCH HAVE YOU SEEN BRAD IMPROVE? “Oh, he’s improved a ton. He’s got a lot of talent. He’s extremely talented and when the car is there, he’ll wheel ‘er. There’s a couple of times we haven’t had the car under him and he didn’t run very good, got in trouble a couple of times. But every time we’ve had the car where he likes it he’s done a good job for us.” AND YOU STARTED THE RACE FROM THE REAR OF THE FIELD. “Yeah, started at the rear over a stupid penalty and drove back to sixth. It was a good day.” WHAT WAS THE PENALTY? “We had some lug nuts that had a threat turned out of ‘em, just trying to make pit stops faster. We’ve got a Busch crew here against all these Cup crews it’s hard to compete against ‘em. We just stepped over the line a little bit trying to be even, you know.”

MARCOS AMBROSE, No. 59 KINGSFORD FORD: “The car was really good at the start of the race. The 22 lost it and I checked-up and I’m not sure who it was, I think the 27, lost it and came down on my door. It’s too bad. It tore a couple of side posts off the car and it was just hanging on from there. We’re trying. We’re just trying, that’s all. It’s not an easy sport. We’re trying to grow and improve and today was a really tough day but I think we’re got direction. It’s disappointing. It’s a hard sport. When it’s not your day you’ve just got to soldier on. From lap 10 we were just fighting all day, just trying to hang on there and we did the best we could.”

DAVID RAGAN, No. 6 DISCOUNT TIRE FORD: “We just didn’t have cautions at the right time. We should have never been in that position. We were just too tight at the beginning. Mike Kelley [crew chief] and everyone on the Discount Tire team worked hard. The car was really good out in clean air and the last half of the race but when you get down a lap and you only have three cautions the whole race, you just don’t have a chance to pick any spots back up. I feel like we could have contended for a top-five, top-10 if we would have been in position there at the end. But we wasn’t as good as we needed to be at the beginning, didn’t catch the cautions. We’ll take it and move on.” IS THERE A CHANCE THIS CAR COULD BE USED AT HOMESTEAD? “Yeah. This has been a good car for us and right now we’re looking at stuff for next year. Depending on what NASCAR changes rule-wise, we probably are going to have to cut some stuff up over the off-season so we’ll get all we can out of this car. There’s a good chance we’ll see it at Homestead in two weeks.”

ROBERT RICHARDSON JR., No. 28 U.S. BORDER PATROL CHEVROLET: HOW WAS YOUR DAY? “Well, being that it was my very first race at Texas Motor Speedway I think it was a plus. I think we came away with a finish and the car is in one piece and that’s what we needed to do today, just go out there and get laps and get better as the race progressed.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR? COULD YOU BE IN THIS CAR FULL-TIME? “Everything is a possibility nowadays but you know how racing is. Some things are last minute deals put together. As of now, I don’t have anything planned for next year but I’ve got one more race with Jay Robinson Racing at Homestead and we’ll see what happens after that.”

    KESELOWSKI PRESS CONFERENCE
“We could use 300 laps instead of 200 and that seems to be the story of the day for everyone on the U.S. NAVY Chevrolet. The last few races have been that way, where if we could double the length of the race I feel like maybe we could win ‘em. Very strong the whole race and listening to lap times and knew that we had a car that could run up there. Started all the way in the back there and passed a lot of car and just didn’t have enough time to get all the way up there. The last run kind of took a gamble on some pit strategy and made an adjustment, probably wasn’t the right way to go that I asked for and slowed us down a little bit but a couple more runs I think we might have had something for ‘em. Just really proud of everyone on the U.S. NAVY Chevrolet. I told ‘em if they keep giving me cars like this we’ll run up front and maybe win a couple of races.” WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE SUGGESTED CHANGES TO THE NATIONWIDE SERIES WHERE IT MIGHT BE HARDER FOR CUP GUYS TO COMPETE FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP? “How ‘bout not letting ‘em practice twice as much as me? That would help quite a bit. I felt like I lost this race today for our guys because I didn’t make the right adjustment. And to be honest with you, I didn’t know what adjustment to make. I took a guess and it was the wrong guess. When they’re out running three, four hours a day more than I am. They’re going to learn that stuff and I’m not. That’s killing me right now. I feel like that’s the biggest problem with our program is probably me and not giving ‘em the feedback it takes to make us a winner.” COMMENT ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR TEAM. “I just started working with Tony Eury Sr. here over the last few weeks and this was his first car, a car that he kind of had some influence in putting together and it showed. This was a car that I felt like was comparable to what Kevin and them guys had. I felt like we could run with ‘em and we were about equal to ‘em. Like I said, I kind of made the wrong adjustments there but we’re building a stronger relationship every week and they’re giving me better cars and I keep running better with ‘em and I feel like we’re only going to get stronger.”
