SAM HORNISH JR., No. 12 MOBIL 1 DODGE: “We’re out there trying to get some laps in, get the tires up to temperature. We were a little bit loose so Steven got a run on me coming off of two the lap before. I got back around him and he just didn’t make the corner. It’s unfortunate. Mobil 1 has really stepped up and tried to help us do this program and they’ve done a great job for us and obviously we’d like to get ‘em some more time out there on the racetrack. I’ve got to thank everybody at Penske Racing. It was one of those things where you can’t control everybody else’s car. If you could it’d be a lot easier.”

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA IN THE No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT RICHMOND.

Notes:

  • Montoya finished 11th and took top rookie honors for the fourth time this season.
  • UNOFFICIALLY David Ragan leads Montoya by one point (111-110) in the Raybestos Rookie standings.

MONTOYA: “Yeah it was good. The Texaco/Havoline Dodge car today was good, just didn’t have enough forward bite. There was no traction in the car so that just really killed us. It was tight in the center and loose off. It was hard but the team did a good job. For some reason there was dirt in the front tires and when I went to restart and went to turn right and the thing went straight to the wall so I had to check-up starting. But it’s okay.” DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GETTING BETTER WITH THE BUSCH PROGRAM? “I think with both programs we’re getting a little better. I think it was good to see the 41 have a good finish here. I think they needed that badly. It was good I think for the whole Ganassi organization.”

DAVID RAGAN, No. 6 DISCOUNT TIRE FORD: “I felt like we had about a seventh or eighth-place car. It took a few laps for it to get going that last run. We certainly didn’t need that last caution. I felt like we were one of the top five or so cars on the track but we just didn’t have the track position. You know, we run down the 42 and the 99 and the 5 from a straightaway back and a caution come out and the car was handling pretty good. We thought more cars would stay out. We were kind of hoping for a couple quick cautions there. Who would have thought a Busch race here at Richmond would have gone 20 laps at the end caution free, looking at the first half of the race. That was a call that Mike Kelley made and I’m going to blame it on him 100 percent [smiles]. We’re a team here. We had a good car and we’ve got it in one piece. We didn’t lose anything, we didn’t gain anything.”

MARCOS AMBROSE, No. 59 KINGSFORD/BUSH’S FORD: “I want to be a hero because I had the incar camera. We had a bad night but we finished another one. I mean, the worst thing you can do is not finish and we finished. We’re still floating around the top-10 somewhere in the championship. We’re just finishing and that’s all we can do right now. I battled everything but the safety car out there. I felt like I got passed by everyone about three times. We just fought all night, just searching for grip. It was just a trying night.”

BOBBY SANTOS, No. 91 RILEY TECHNOLOGIES TOYOTA: “We run good for a while, just faded at the end. I got hit and cut down a tire but overall I can’t complain.” WERE YOU SURPRISED HOW LONG YOU RAN IN THE TOP-10? “No, I was actually hoping we could run up there the whole race with them. I don’t know [laughs].” WHAT WAS THE MAIN THING THAT YOU LEARNED TONIGHT? “More laps, more experience. The competition is tough and I’ve just got to get better each time out.”

JUSTIN DIERCKS, No. 70 FORETRAVEL MOTORCOACH CHEVROLET: “We finished the race and 50 laps into that race I thought I was going to be done for the day. So, yeah, I’m happy with the finish. We were at one time higher than 28th but it just got too tight there at the end and we weren’t able to make some spots back up. But all in all, I’m pretty happy. I made the race. I didn’t have a good qualifying run. Made the race, finished the race and all the fenders are on it and we learned a lot today, that’s for sure. Hopefully we’ll be better at Nashville.”

BRAD COLEMAN, No. 18 CARINO’S ITALIAN GRILL CHEVROLET: “It was all right. The car was so much different than it was in practice. In practice it was awesome. On long runs we were running 21.90s, which is a great pace. You get to the race at nighttime and it was a lot different. We’re going to go back to the shop and look at it. My team did a great job all night. They never gave up on me. We just worked on the car harder and harder. We’ll see what we can do with the Carino’s Italian Grill Chevrolet in Kentucky.” DID THE TRACK COOL OFF THAT MUCH? “I don’t know what it is because when we were here for testing it didn’t change that much when it turned to nighttime. I don’t know. I’m perplexed.”
