Team Report
NASCAR Busch Series (NBS)
Race 13 of 35—Lowe’s (Charlotte, N.C.) Motor Speedway
DARLINGTON RECAP: Racing at the Darlington (S.C.) Raceway is as competitive as it gets and one mistake can cost a driver dearly, as many found out in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200. After qualifying 17th, Tony Stewart knew it was going to take some work if he wanted to put the No. 33 Old Spice Body Spray Chevrolet into Victory Lane. Once the green flag dropped over the 43-car field, the Columbus, Indiana native, quickly worked his way inside the top-10, but a late race incident with Ryan Newman caused Stewart to make an unscheduled pit stop to repair the damage. The Old Spice pit crew was able to make repairs to the No. 33 Chevrolet and kept him on the lead lap in the 36th position. From the restart, Stewart was on the move towards the front of the field, passing 29 cars to finish seventh. With this top-10 finish, the No. 33 team maintains the seventh position in the 2007 NBS Owner’s point standings.
SOLID RECORD IN THE BUSCH SERIES AT LMS: Kevin Harvick has 12 career NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) starts at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (LMS). Of those 12 starts, he has compiled seven top-10 finishes including three pole awards (2003 Spring, 2003 Fall, 2001 Spring).
LOGGING MILES: Kevin Harvick will drive 900 miles this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Harvick will participate in the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 (NBS) on Saturday and the Coca-Cola 600 (NNCS) on Sunday. This means that Harvick would have driven from Charlotte, North Carolina to Madison, Wisconsin, for example.
MR. CONSISTENCY: During his NASCAR Busch Series career, Harvick has compiled 130 top-10 finishes to go along with 27 wins. Harvick’s average starting position is ninth and his average finish is eighth over an eight-year NASCAR Busch Series career.
MILLION DOLLAR MAN: Kevin Harvick drove the No. 29 Pennzoil Chevrolet to the win last weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in the NEXTEL Cup All-Star race. With the win, Harvick collected the $1 million prize and his first ever win at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
FOR THE LOVE OF RACING: Kevin Harvick showed last weekend why he loves to race. On Friday night, Harvick competed in the NASCAR Truck Series race and won the NNCS All-Star challenge on Saturday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Early Sunday morning Harvick jumped on a plane and flew to the Iowa Speedway where he competed in the NASCAR Grand National Series event. Harvick dominated most of the day, but due to engine problems, Harvick finished in the second position.
THIS RACE, ONE YEAR AGO: Tony Stewart qualified the No. 33 Old Spice Chevrolet in the 10th position and looked strong early in the race. Unfortunately, just nine laps into the event, something unexpectedly broke on his Chevrolet sending him hard into the outside wall. Stewart was taken to the infield care center and was released. He was then taken to a local hospital for precautionary x-ray examinations as he was experiencing pain in his right shoulder. Stewart’s x-rays were negative and he would be cleared to race in Sunday’s Cup Series event.
OPERATION WAX SMOKE: KHI Busch Series driver Tony Stewart said that if someone would make a $100,000 donation to the Victory Junction Gang Camp (VJGC), he would wax his chest and back. “I thought it was a hilarious way to raise money for an excellent cause. I am calling on my fans (and Tony's too!) to make a donation in an effort to raise $100,000 for the Victory Junction Gang Camp,” said Kevin Harvick. “Plus, it’s a way to have a good laugh at Tony's expense.” To date, “Operation: Wax Smoke!” has raised $26,587. Kevin Harvick Quotes:
ON RACING MILE AND A HALF TRACKS: “I think for us as a team, the mile-and-a-half tracks like Texas and Atlanta have been good so far this year. I look forward to driving the No. 33 RoadLoans.com Chevrolet at Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend. Last time we were in the RoadLoans.com Chevrolet at a mile and a half track (Texas) we finished 11th.”
ON THE BUSCH SERIES SO FAR THIS YEAR AT KHI: “I think the season has been good so far this year. We finished first and second a few weeks back at Talladega and have racked up 10 top-10 finishes in 12 races. Dan (Stillman) and Wally (Rogers) have done a great job with our two Busch teams, and DeLana and I look for that success to continue down the road.”
Dan Stillman Quotes:
ON HAVING A WEEKEND OFF BEFORE 16 STRAIGHT RACES: “It is great whenever you have a weekend off in this sport. As a team we were able to regroup during the off weekend and get cars ready for the upcoming races. Having 16 straight weekends can put a beating on any team, but the guys back at KHI do a great job getting the cars ready for each week.”
ON BEING SEVENTH IN OWNER POINTS AFTER 12 RACES: “I think at the beginning of the year we planned on being inside the top-10 in points going into Charlotte. Any time a crew chief has Tony Raines, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Ron Fellows and Cale Gale behind the wheel something good is going to happen. I think we are going to get better as a team and hopefully can continue our climb to the top of the point standings.”
