DAVID RAGAN IN THE No. 6 DISCOUNT TIRE FORD CLINCHED RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN TONIGHT’S FORD 300.
Note:
Ragan racked up four top-five and nine top-10 finishes on his way to claiming Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors. He was Raybestos Rookie of the Race 11 times in 35 races.
DAVID RAGAN: WHAT HAPPENED? “Our Discount Tire Ford Fusion was pretty fast and I was just kind of riding around. Green flag pit stop and I was just trying to get all I could. That’s one of the things I’ve been working on as a rookie, just trying to make advantages and pluses on and off of pit road. I just got down too hard, downshifted too late and locked the rear brakes up and wheel-hopped it, spun out and flat-spotted the tires. And then we were coming around and I didn’t think they were that bad and just blew a right rear and tore our right rear quarter panel up. I think we were going to be fine until the tire got cut but we’ll learn from it. We’ve got a pretty good Discount Tire Ford here so we’ll fix it and probably run it at California next year.” YOU ARE THE 2007 RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN THE BUSCH SERIES. “I wished we could have had a little better night tonight. We had a great Discount Tire Ford Fusion and I would have been a lot better to end the night with a top-five or possibly a win. But certainly this is what we set out to do in the springtime. This was one of our goals that we had this year was to finish in the top-10 in points and win Raybestos Rookie of the Year and we finished fifth in points and won rookie of the year. Two of the three we got to cross off. I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t win a race this year. We were pretty close a few times but it gives us something to look forward to next year. It’s very cool to be the Raybestos Rookie of the Year. Jack Roush has got a nitch for finding younger guys that are able to come into the sport and do this: Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, and my teammate last year Danny O’Quinn. We were all able to do that so it’s pretty cool to be able to follow those guys. Hopefully we’ll continue on and win some races and win some championships of other forms.”
BRAD KESELOWSKI, No. 88 U.S. NAVY CHEVROLET: “It certainly could have been better. We had a car tonight that run in the top three or four and I made some mistakes and different stuff happened that kind of limited that. We didn’t get a break. The yellow came out and trapped us a lap down on the pit sequence. All we needed was 10 more laps and everyone would have pitted. It’s unbelievable to catch breaks like that. Eventually we’re going to catch some good breaks and go out and win some races next year and I’m excited about that.” HOW MUCH FUN WAS IT TO LEAD THE RACE TONIGHT? “That’s what it’s all about. We just need to do that with one lap to go [smiles]. It was good to know that we had a car that could do that. We’re making progress, we’re building confidence and trust in each other and that’s good for next year. I’m pretty excited about that.” WHAT WAS THE MAIN THING THAT YOU LEARNED THIS YEAR? “There’s a lot of different things. The teamwork deal, I continue to learn every week on what it takes to be a part of a team and that’s a lot of what it takes to win. And just learning the tracks, learning the drivers and getting the respect of the drivers, that’s a big thing. This is probably one of the first nights where I can remember people actually moving out of the way for me, not all of them, but a few of them so that was pretty cool. I think the biggest thing is kind of living the dream and looking forward to it next year.” NEXT YEAR COULD BE THE BIGGEST EVER FOR YOU. “I’m very excited. I think the way we finished out the year and the things we’re learning and building, I think we’ve got a strong shot at maybe even running for the championship next year.”
MARCOS AMBROSE, No. 59 KINGSFORD FORD: “It’s better to be lucky that good and today we got lucky there at the end there’s no doubt. A lot of guys got trapped a lap down but we’ve had a lot of great racecars that were worthy of a top-10 finish and we were robbed of them. You take ‘em when you get ‘em like tonight and it’s a great finish for our season. A top-10 in points, we’re top-20 in owner points and we’re really proud to finish the year strong and just excited for the future.” YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT OF THINGS IN YOUR CAREER. WHERE DOES THIS SEASON FIT IN? “I really feel like we’ve come a long way as a team. It’s been a journey for us. It’s a bounce-back for the 59 team. They’ve had a couple of years outside of the top-10 so we’re going better with that. I’ve grown as a driver. We’ve grown together as a team. Our morale is high, we’re confident going into next year and it’s just going to be real exciting.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR? “I’m driving the 59 Kingsford Charcoal car next year. That’s locked in. They haven’t kicked me out yet so I’m going to turn up in January at Daytona expecting to sit in that seat and we’ll find out I guess [smiles]. We just wanted to finish this year the right way and not get confused about what we’re doing for 2008. Busch Series again full-time for sure. There’s rumors and stuff floating around about some Cup starts in the 21 or maybe a second entry for JTG but I haven’t seen a contract across my desk. I’ll wait until they give me the nod.” YOU GUYS MIGHT BE ABLE TO WIN A RACE OR TWO NEXT YEAR. “I think next year we’ve got to win races if we want to call it a success. Championship points can get broken by bad luck, misfortunate and incidents that are outside of your own control. But in general, if we don’t get race wins next year, I won’t call it a success. I think we’ve really got to step up on the results side of the business. We’ve done really well on everything else. I’ve grown, I’ve learned, our team has come together. We’re passionate about our racing and we’re getting good people around us. There’s a lot of good stuff happening. We’ve just got to make sure to keep that going and we’ve got to win races. That will be the goal for me next year to come out of the box strong, try to win a race and try to secure ourselves well inside the top-10.” WHAT’S THE MAIN THING THAT YOU LEARNED THIS YEAR? “It’s a lot harder than it looks [laughs]. It’s just really tough. It’s really tough racing and it’s a long season, too. It’s the first time I’ve ever taken on a 35-race scheduled and I’ll be honest with you: I’m worn out. I want to get home, I want to chase some kangaroos and go fishing. It’s been a long season and I’m looking forward to seeing friends and family.”
