RoadLoans.com 200 - Rookie Friday Quotes
Raybestos Rookie Marcos Ambrose finished sixth in the spring race at Dover, best of any freshman driver. Ambrose has claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors five times this season.
Notes:
Ambrose trails David Ragan leads by 25 points (213-188) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering Saturday’s race at Dover. He has scored four top-10 finishes in 28 starts this season and is seventh in the Busch Series championship standings, 124 points behind sixth-place Hamilton Jr.
Ambrose has captured WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors twice this season: Montreal (race No. 23) and Las Vegas (race No. 4).
MARCOS AMBROSE, No. 59 KINGSFORD FORD: WHAT WOULD IT MEAN FOR YOU TO WIN RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? YOU ARE 25 POINTS BEHIND DAVID RAGAN. “He’s done a great job. He’s doing all that Cup stuff so he gets twice the laps in a weekend that I can. All season he’s been just one step ahead, just been that little bit better than I have. We’ve caught him back here the last couple of weeks and we’ve gained some points on him. We’re still within earshot with a few races to go and we haven’t given up. But we need to start dominating him, I guess. If he has a couple bad weeks, we have a couple really strong weeks it could balance itself back out.” WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN THE REMAINING RACES THIS YEAR? “Our aim is still to try to get Raybestos Rookie of the Year. Our aim to finish in the top-10 in points, solidly, and finish the owners in the top-20 in points and just try to run really well. Snag a top-five, some top-10s and we’ll be happy with that.” DO YOU REALISTICALLY THINK YOU CAN WIN A POLE OR A RACE THIS SEASON? “We’ve been on everything but the pole. We’ve had second, third, fourth, sixth so it’s just a matter of time. It depends on what these Cup guys do. If the Cup guys weren’t around we would have looked a lot better on our qualifying performances. We’re close. We’re really close.” YOU RAN WELL HERE AT DOVER BACK IN JUNE. “There seems to be a slight trend for me on concrete tracks, for whatever reason. Things seem to go better on concrete tracks. We’ve got a different package here this weekend than we had last time. I feel like we ran good last time, probably as good as we could have. We needed to prove that and we’ve got to keep working forward here so we’ve got a new package, new car, new way of thinking about setting up the car and I’ve learned a lot more, too, so things are different. I’m looking forward to a good run. I think we can run well here. I think we’re ready for a breakout race between now and the end of the season. We don’t want to force it; it will come to us naturally, but I think this could be a really good week. You’ve got to be patient for the rest of the year. I just don’t want to get carried away. We’ve had a lift in form the last few weeks and we want to keep that going. We want to finish this race, secure ourself in the points a little more, and I feel like we can gain another three or four spots in owner points and maybe one or two spots in driver points if it goes well for us and that’s what we’re aiming for. We’ve just got to keep ourselves in earshot of those guys in front of us in the points.” WILL YOU FOCUS ON RACE SETUP IN PRACTICE TODAY? “Yeah, we’ll focus on that. We’ll just try to make the car comfortable for me knowing what to expect in the race. I think it’s a different tire here than last time so things will change and not everything stays the same. I’m just learning to set these cars up to be good for the races.” YOU MUST BE PLEASED TO RANK INSIDE THE TOP-10 IN THE BUSCH SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS. “Yeah, really happy with that. We’re getting better and better was we go through. It’s been a great run for us and I feel like we’ve left some out there but at the same time I think we’ve done pretty well.” WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING THAT YOU’VE LEARNED IN THIS SERIES? “It’s not easy. I knew it was never going to be easy but I didn’t know it was going to be this tough. It’s a really tough sport and just week in and week out, the competition is turning up and it’s hard to run good and look good.” HOW MUCH DO YOU LEARN FROM THE NEXTEL CUP DRIVERS? “You learn a lot off of ‘em. I might not be able to beat them on the day but you soak in a lot of what looks good on the racetrack, what you should be trying to achieve on car setup and speed. I just can’t wait to run ‘em for a top-five or a victory and show ‘em what we’ve got.”
