Camping World 300 - Clint Bowyer Notes
Clint Bowyer
No. 21 Camping World Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet
Event/Date: Camping World 300 presented by RVs.com – September 1, 2007
Venue: California Speedway – Fontana, Calif.
This Week’s Camping World Chevrolet at California Speedway … Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 056 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) stable. This is the same No. 21 Chevrolet Timothy Peters raced in March at Bristol Motor Speedway (St. 26, Fn. 25) and at Nashville Superspeedway in June (St.4, Fn. 20). Since then, the car has been outfitted with a new body and front chassis clip.
Clint in California … In four NBS starts at California Speedway, Bowyer has two poles and logged a pair of top-five finishes. The five-time Busch Series winner finished fourth in his first start at the two-mile suburban Los Angeles oval in February 2005 and won the pole and finished third the following September. Since then, he’s finished 13th and 16th, respectively, and is the most recent pole winner at the annual Labor Day weekend festival of speed. Additionally, Bowyer has completed all 600 laps contested over those same four races.
Back Where it Started … For the first time since 2004, Bowyer will take the wheel of RCR’s No. 21 Chevy for this weekend’s Camping World 300 presented by RVs.com. The Emporia, Kan., native spent 2004 sharing driving duties with Kevin Harvick in RCR’s No. 21 Chevrolet. In his first year competing in NASCAR’s junior circuit, Bowyer earned one pole, four top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 17 races.
Pretty Strong for a Part-Timer … In 15 NASCAR Busch Series starts this season, Bowyer has amassed two wins, nine top-five and 13 top-10 finishes. Despite having competed in just 15 of the division’s 26 races to date, the Emporia, Kan., driver has led 298 laps and is 12th in driver points after picking up thee positions following his eighth-place finish in last weekend’s Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
RCR Busch Dominance … Much has been made of the supposed dominance of the No. 60 team driver this season. Closer inspection of the statistics, however, shows a different story. After 26 Busch Series races, Kevin Harvick has one more win (5), two more poles (2) and only one fewer top-10 finish (16) in seven fewer races. The No. 29 Holiday Inn team has the same number of top-five finishes (13) as the No. 60 team and two more top-10 finishes (19). Clint Bowyer has two wins, nine top-five and 13 top-10 finishes, and is 12th in points having run only 15 races. Harvick, Bowyer, Burton and Scott Wimmer are all in the top 20 in the driver’s standings despite running limited schedules. RCR leads the Busch series with nine victories (Harvick – five; Burton – two; Bowyer – two). The three RCR Busch Series teams (No. 2, No. 21 and No. 29) have a total of 32 top-five and 46 top-10 finishes and have led 1,146 laps, just less than one-fourth of the 4,698 laps contested.
RCR Busch Cars in Fontana … In 24 NBS starts at the two-mile D-shaped oval, RCR has earned three poles (Bowyer - September 2006 & 2005; Harvick April 2003), 10 top-five and 13 top-10 finishes. RCR Busch cars have also led 194 laps at California Speedway.
Logging Laps on Labor Day Weekend … Following his duties behind the wheel of the Camping World Chevy, Bowyer will turn his attention to the No. 07 DIRECTV Chevrolet for Sunday’s Sharp AQUOS 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race. Live coverage of the 25th stop on the 2007 NEXTEL Cup tour will take the green flag Sunday, September 2 beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The race will be televised live on ESPN and broadcast worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying will be televised live on SPEED Friday, August 31 beginning at 6 p.m. EDT.
Up to Speed … The Camping World 300 presented by RVs.com from California Speedway will be televised live on ESPN2 Saturday, September 1 at 10 p.m. EDT. The 26th race of the 2007 season will be broadcast live on MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio.
CLINT BOWYER QUOTE:
You’ll be driving the No. 21 car this weekend for the first time in a few years. How do you like that?
“I’m looking forward to it. That’s a completely different team than it was when I drove the No. 21 back in 2004. I’ve never raced with Shane (crew chief Shane Wilson) and those guys and, obviously, they’ve had a lot of success. I’m looking forward to getting to the race track and seeing what kind of team they have. California has been a good track for me, I like running that place. I’m going to gather as much information as I can and put it to good use not only on Saturday but on Sunday, as well.”
