Busch Wins Wild One at The Glen
Kurt Busch and Robby Gordon ferociously battled for the lead over the final laps of the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, with Busch emerging as the winner following a green-white-checkered finish in the NASCAR Busch Series event. For Busch, who started from the pole, this is his second Busch Series win in his sixth series start – all in the 2006 season. The win comes in his first career Busch Series start at Watkins Glen. Busch’s other Busch Series victory came this past April, at Texas Motor Speedway. Busch led the most laps on the day, leading the race three times for a total of 41 of the event’s 83 laps. Busch has finished in the top 10 in all six of his Busch Series starts this season with five top-five efforts. Busch is off to a hot start at The Glen, winning both poles and now the NBS race. He will gun for a sweep of the weekend’s events tomorrow in the AMD at the Glen. The last driver to win both races during a weekend in NASCAR’s top two series was Kevin Harvick this past April at Phoenix International Raceway. Robby Gordon mounted a furious charge on Busch’s No. 39 Penske Truck Rental Dodge but fell 0.558 seconds short. This is Gordon’s second consecutive runner-up effort at Watkins Glen. Ironically he finished second to the No. 39 car last season as well. Jamie McMurray finished third despite overheating problems, while Greg Biffle finished fourth. John Andretti was the top finishing Busch Series regular in the fifth position, his career best finish in the series.
Second Pole of the Weekend for Kurt Busch at Watkins Glen
Kurt Busch has taken a shine to road racing. He swept the season’s pole positions in the NEXTEL Cup Series, then went one step further and swept the poles for both races this weekend at The Glen. Busch won his second pole in two days by winning the Busch Pole for today’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. The last driver to sweep a race weekend’s pole positions for NASCAR’s top two series was Busch’s teammate Ryan Newman in November 2005 at Texas Motor Speedway. This is Busch’s first NASCAR Busch Series start at Watkins Glen and his first pole in six career starts the series. Road course ace Scott Pruett win join Busch on the front row of the starting grid, while points leader Kevin Harvick will start from the third position. Another road race specialist Ron Fellows will start fourth, followed by Newman in fifth.
