DANNY O’QUINN JR., No. 50 STONEBRIDGE LIFE FORD: WHAT HAPPENED? “I’m not really sure. All I saw was Stewart upside down coming down on my hood. I didn’t really have anywhere to go. It’s just one of those deals. You’re bunched up so much here at Talladega and Daytona and when they have a wreck you don’t have much to do. The car was really fast today. I thought we were going to get us a really good run. It seemed like we could get up through there. It’s just unfortunate. Hopefully we’ll get it back together and get it back out there. There was just nowhere to go. We had a fast car and it looked like we were going to get us a good run, just nowhere to go. I was having a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it but when trouble happens there’s nowhere you can go.” WHEN YOU GOT ON THE BRAKES, DID YOU THINK YOU MIGHT MISS STEWART? “Oh, no. You’re running 190 miles per hour and you’re not going to slow down too much in two seconds. It’s just one of those deals. If I hadn’t maybe been there on the outside I might could have got down, but there’s cars all under me. I didn’t really have any options there, just kind of plowed into it. I tried to get whoaed up as much as possible. Fortunately the car is not destroyed. It may need a front clip but we can fix that and get ready for Daytona.”

MARK MCFARLAND IN THE No. 88 NAVY CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT TALLADEGA.
Notes:

  • McFarland finished seventh, his best effort in 20 Busch Series starts. His previous best finish was 15th in March 2006 at Atlanta.
  • This is McFarland’s first career top-10 finish.
  • McFarland UNOFFICIALLY jumped from fifth to second in the Raybestos Rookie standings behind Burney Lamar (107-89).
  • This is just the second time in 2006 that McFarland has claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors.

    1997: Steve Park, second
    1997: Tim Steele, sixth

    1998: Matt Hutter, ninth
    2000: Mike Borkowski, 10th
    2001: Greg Biffle, sixth

    2004: Kyle Busch, fourth
MCFARLAND: YOU RALLIED THERE AT THE END. “We kind of took it easy there for a while. We just tried to keep the fenders on it and then just tried to be there at the end. The car ran good. We got those tires and that helped out a lot. It was just a good day. I’m out of breath [smiles].” DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT LINE TO GET INTO? “Well, I had the best coach on the pit box, Junior. He said ‘Stay in the middle lane and don’t get out of it’ and it paid off. I’m more worn out in this superspeedway racing than short tracks [smiles].” HOW BIG IS IT FOR THE TEAM TO FINISH WELL TODAY? “It’s huge, man. We’ve been struggling a little bit. We’d never thought we’d get our first top-10 at Talladega. I’m real proud of this team. I’d like to thank the NAVY for all they do. Now we get to move on to a track where I have some experience [laughs].” HOW DID JUNIOR HELP YOU FROM THE PIT BOX? “Different things to do with other cars to try to get around them and it works. He’s not the master of this stuff for nothing. There’s just little things you can do to pass cars and it helps so much.” HOW PHYSICAL WAS IT AT THE END OF THE RACE? “Pretty good. I hit Clint a bunch trying to get him pushed up there. It was fun. This was the first time that I got to get in there and really do some bump drafting. It’s cool.” WAS THIS CAR BETTER PUSHING OR PULLING? “I’m not real sure. It was real good in practice in clean air but we never got a chance to try it. I’m just proud of this team.”

JOHN ANDRETTI, No. 10 FREEDOM ROADS/CAMPING WORLD FORD: “We made up some spots on the last lap. It’s like going down the interstate. If a hole opens up, you go for it. At the end there we were just trying to protect ourselves because we didn’t want to get tore up. So often you get tore up and you have a good car. We’re going to go work on it and make it a little bit sportier. This is the car that we had at Daytona and we think we’ll go back to Daytona and be really quick. I’m not too worried about it. I’m just glad to get out in one piece, theoretically, and move on down the road.” HOW INTENSE WAS THE RACING AFTER THE FINAL RESTART? “It was pretty intense the whole time, but I had been doing more protecting, driving more defensive than offensive. Sometimes that will get you in trouble too. When I started moving on offense instead of defense and I was about ready to go back on full defense and lo and behold somebody crashed. I flat-sided the wall but didn’t bend anything, just the sheet metal. At the end it’s where it gets fun because then you go racing. What you’ve got is what you’ve got. If a hole opens up you feel great and if it closes up you feel horrible.” ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE FINISH? “Yeah, all things considered. We could have been on our lid [laughs].”

TODD KLUEVER, No. 06 3M FORD: “To be honest with you, the last couple of weeks, just to finish is kind of cool for us right now. We’ve had a really tough last couple of weeks. At least my guys in the body shop don’t have to worry about fixing another car. I don’t know what happened there. All day long I was just kind of riding in the back, hanging out, and anytime I wanted I could drive back into the lead pack. With about 20 laps to go there it started to lose a little bit. I don’t know if the damage on the right side hurt it that much or if maybe the motor started laying down. I’m not going to blame the motor because our motor shop does a really good job. The last 20 laps it just seemed to fall off and I don’t know why. I’ve got a really good car for Daytona that we’ve been saving. This car will be our backup car when we go to Daytona. I’ve got an awesome car that I’m really excited about taking to Daytona in the summer so that will be cool. We don’t have to fix another wrecked racecar, which has seemed to have been our trend lately. We can get to working on our down force cars like we need to be right now.” DID YOUR CAR GET PUSHED INTO THE FENCE? “Just a little bit. In all honesty, when the 33 was upside down and flying, I was looking up at him to make sure that he wasn’t going to land on me and I was making sure that I was far enough to the outside to miss him and I just got the outside wall a little bit. We had to roll out the right front tire just a tick. I didn’t think it was enough damage to slow us down there at the end.”

TRACY HINES, No. 12 TAKE ME ON VACATION DODGE: “It’s Talladega. The car was better than that. The car was a lot better than where we finished. It was hard jockeying for position. I had a good restart two restarts to the end. The 18 car moved up. I was following the 21. The 21 was a very, very fast racecar and I thought I would just hang on to him and get what I could. He took off and started passing a lot of racecars and I followed him as good as I could. Then one of the guys decided that they were going to get in between us and they came up. I had to lift to keep from crashing. When I lifted the whole line too off. That’s Talladega.”

BURNEY LAMAR, No. 77 DOLLAR GENERAL CHEVROLET: “The car was really good at the end. I slipped up there on the last lap and went from 14th to 20th. Gene made a few changes on the car and at the end of the race the Dollar General Chevrolet was excellent. It couldn’t have been any better.”
