KYLE BUSCH -- NO. 5 LOWE'S/SPECTRACIDE TRIAZICIDE CHEVY
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY PREVIEW
KILLER PAINT SCHEME: Kyle Busch's Monte Carlo SS will carry a unique paint scheme in Friday evening's NASCAR Busch Series event at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Painted green, black and silver, the No. 5 Lowe's/Spectracide Triazicide Chevrolet features an army of small lawn-eating worms, better known as grubs. Spectracide Triazicide kills more than 180 insects -- including grubs -- that can damage home lawns.
RICHMOND RUNDOWN: Busch has made eight NASCAR starts at Richmond, posting an average qualifying effort of 8.5 and an average finish of 10.75. He has competed in the Busch Series four times, in the NEXTEL Cup Series on two occasions and in the Craftsman Truck Series twice. The Las Vegas native earned his first-ever NASCAR victory in the May 2004 Busch Series race at the .75-mile oval.
TRACK RECORD: Busch still holds the Busch Series qualifying record at Richmond International Raceway. He earned the pole position in May 2004 with a lap of 20.874 seconds and 129.348 mph.
CHASSIS 345 FOR BUSCH: Crew chief Chad Walter has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 345 for Friday night's Busch Series show. This No. 5 Lowe's/Spectracide Triazicide Chevy had a successful Richmond test in March, but has not raced since last season at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park.
MR. CONSISENTCY: In two seasons of full-time Busch Series competition (2004 and 2006), Busch has spent just 10 of 44 races outside the top-10 in the championship standings. He finished runner-up to Martin Truex Jr. in his 2004 rookie campaign and currently sits seventh overall after 10 events.
MOVIN' ON UP: Busch and Team 5 have improved their position in the championship standings after four of the past five Busch Series events. They were 18th following the March 18 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway and now sit seventh thanks to Saturday's third-place finish at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 LOWE'S/SPECTRACIDE TRIAZICIDE CHEVROLET: (ON HIS UNIQUE LOWE'S/SPECTRACIDE TRIAZICIDE PAINT SCHEME.) "I'll have some passengers with me Friday night, with a few grubs hanging out on the hood and rear quarter panels. Those things are hideous, so it's hard not to get somewhat grossed out looking at the car. You don't want those little suckers eating up your green grass, that's for sure. Triazicide will definitely take care of the grubs, but I'll give them the ride of their lives first."
BUSCH: (ON RACING AT RICHMOND.) "Richmond is a different type of short track. It's more of a momentum place, meaning you don't have to stop and turn in the corners like most short tracks. At Richmond, we use much more of a free-flowing driving style. Don't get me wrong, you have to slow down, but you can't stop the car's momentum."
BUSCH: (ON WINNING HIS FIRST BUSCH SERIES RACE IN MAY 2004 AT RICHMOND.) "That was a great weekend for the whole Lowe's team. We got our second pole of the year and won our first Busch Series race. The track was freshly paved and, for some reason, I always seem to run well on new pavement. We led a bunch of laps and it was just a great night."
BUSCH: (ON FINISHING THIRD AT TALLADEGA.) "The No. 5 team had a great run at Talladega. This season we've been a little behind where want to be, so it was a good points day for us."
CHAD WALTER, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 LOWE'S/SPECTRACIDE TRIAZICIDE CHEVROLET: (ON TESTING RICHMOND IN MARCH.) "We learned a lot from our Richmond test. The new tires are a little harder than what we had last year. We encountered a lot of tire 'chattering' during the test and making it turn through the center (of the corners) is a little tough. We concentrated a lot on our brakes during the session and I think we got some things figured out."
WALTER: (ON THE ONE-DAY SCHEDULE AT RICHMOND.) "The Richmond one-day schedule can be hard to do. NASCAR provided us with a two-day test so, to me, there's no reason not to be prepared when you get there. It's a long day, but you're happy when you get home on Friday night."
WALTER: (HAS THE TEAM PUT AN EMPHASIS ON SHORT TRACKS?) "We've worked really hard on our short-track package this year. We had a good test session back in March and figured out that we're sometimes not so good for one lap, but we'll be better throughout a long run. Qualifying will be important and we'll have to be consistent over the long run."
WALTER: (ON THE TEAM'S PERFORMANCE THUS FAR.) "The misfortunes we've had this season can happen to any team at any time. We're learning. We've had a few self-inflicted wounds, like missing the pit box in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago. Those are the kind of mistakes that we learn from. Talladega was a great race for this No. 5 Lowe's team. We're just aiming for more days like that."
