Looking Back:
To recognize the history of the NASCAR Busch Series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006, each week we’ll take a look back into David Green’s 16-year racing history, as it relates to this week’s track:
Comments taken from a testing session at RIR in March, 2006
“I remember in 1991, in my rookie year, I remember showing up here and 70 cars showed up. Back then the series was full of plenty powerful teams. I remember watching Earnhardt load his car up. He’d just won Daytona and he loaded his car up and put it in the truck because he’d failed to make the race. And I think that’s one part of history with the Busch Series - how competitive it’s been all across the board. It’s still an awful lot of fun and to celebrate 25 years for them and I know Kleenex has been in the sport for 13 years, so it’s been great to be a part of their program also.”
David Green on Richmond:
“Richmond is the raciest short track we have on the circuit. Its very unique differences in both ends of the track makes a team take a strong focus on corner entry. It’s the ultimate challenge for the crew chief and driver: to get the balance right to compliment both ends.
“With the seasoning of the track over the years, Richmond has now become a two-to-three lane track all the time. With the gear rule we have, it requires good brakes, a good bottom end with your engine package, and as always, a car that cuts good through the center of the corner the entire tire and fuel run.
“Richmond has been a very good track for my team and I, but we have come up short of a victory there. We’re taking our best short track car – one we took to Phoenix and Pikes Peak. With what we learned at Phoenix last week and our Richmond test in March, my crew chief Stewart Cooper and I have a lot of confidence and can’t wait to get back to some real racing in Richmond!
“Ever since the Texas race (April 8), I have felt like as a team we have started to turn the corner a bit and can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. Going to Richmond this week, we are inside the top 30 in the Busch Series points and we can solely concentrate on race runs. It’s our goal to run the most laps in practice and go over every scenario for the Friday night race.
“We know this will be a track position race as well, so we’ll make a game plan to have good pit stops and get our last stop done before anybody else does. That will allow us to run in that clean air all the way to Victory Lane!”
