Circuit City 250 - Richmond International Raceway
Harvick Wins Three Out of Last Four
NASCAR Busch Series point leader, 2001 series champion and the hottest driver in NASCAR, Kevin Harvick won his 20th career NASCAR Busch Series race in his 142nd start. Harvick engaged in a 10-lap shootout to the finish with Richard Childress Racing teammate Jeff Burton to win the Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI at Richmond International Raceway Saturday morning by a mere 0.150 seconds. This is Harvick’s third win of the season and third in the last four races, coming on the heels of his NASCAR Busch Series – NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series sweep last month at Phoenix. This is his third win at Richmond and his second in the spring race. He has won two consecutive races here dating back to last year’s fall event. Hsrvick’s Richmond totals are three wins, seven top fives and eight top 10s in those 11 races. He started 10th in this race, the eighth time in 11 career races at Richmond he’s started 10th or better. The win was a second highlight on the day for the driver nicknamed “Happy” – Harvick and Childress announced on Friday that they have agreed to continue their pairing in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series through 2009. The event actually started on Friday, about 30 minutes late due to rain showers. Two red flags for rain totaling more than an hour, combined with 13 caution flag periods pushed the late race dramatics to conclude at 12:36 a.m. Saturday. Harvick started 10th in the U.S. Coast Guard Chevrolet and drove a patient race. He took the lead from Paul Menard in the Menard’s Chevrolet with 46 laps remaining in the event. Three more cautions kept the leaders tightly bunched. The final restart came with 14 laps remaining. Burton, a South Boston, Va., native racing at his home track, challenged to the high and low sides of Harvick over the final 10 pressure-packed laps, and finished second in his 250th series start. Harvick extended his points lead by winning at Richmond. He leads second-place Clint Bowyer, his Richard Childress Racing teammate, by 317 points. Following Burton in second place was Matt Kenseth in third, followed by Ford teammate Greg Biffle who was relegated to the rear of the field at the start due to an unapproved adjustment after impound. Ryan Newman ended his day in the fifth position. Paul Menard was the highest-finishing NASCAR Busch Series regular with an eighth-place finish.
Leffler Nabs RIR Busch Pole
Just two races ago, Jason Leffler won the first Busch Pole of the season for a NASCAR Busch Series regular at Phoenix. Today, Leffler did it again. Leffler outran all of his competitors as well as all of the NEXTEL Cup invaders to take the pole position for the Circuit City 250 presented by Funai at the Richmond International Raceway. This is the second pole of the season for Leffler and only the second by someone who does not compete as a regular in the NASCAR NEXTEL Series. Leffler’s qualifying lap was clocked in at 21.372 seconds, at an average speed of 126.334. The next five positions are filled by Cup regulars, led by Clint Bowyer in the ACDelco Chevrolet, posting a lap of 21.441 seconds to qualify in the second position. Greg Biffle will roll of from the third spot, while Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne round out the top-five starting positions.
