Looking Back:
To recognize the history of the NASCAR Busch Series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006, each week we’ll take a look back into David Green’s 16-year racing history, as it relates to this week’s track:
Green holds the NASCAR Busch Series qualifying record at O’Reilly Raceway Park, which he set in 1994. He started the Kroger 200 from the pole that year with the speed of 113.461 and finished in seventh place.
David Green on O’Reilly Raceway Park:
“It’s short tracking at its best. ORP is a small track, with racing that’s wild and produces odd circumstances year after year. The groove is right up next to the wall, which makes it very challenging. It’s a fine line between being in the groove and out of it – and finding yourself against the wall.
“ORP is another one of those tracks that define the Busch Series: fender banging, great side by side racing, and a lot of bad tempers at the end of the night.
“The key to success at ORP is getting your car to turn well through the center, yet you have to have good drive-off too. That’s what we have worked on over the past few weeks. It’s our priority to cap off this season with the same performance we had in 2003 during our championship battle when we had three wins and came within 14 points of a championship. That’s our goal and we are determined to get back on track.
“With a bunch of great runs and poles there over the years – including the track qualifying record - ORP is one of my favorites. (Co-Crew Chief) Stewart (Cooper), the Brewco team and I really feel like this could be our weekend. With the performance we had last week at Gateway, we are pumped and ready for the challenge.
“Being close to my hometown of Owensboro, this weekend I’m expecting a lot of friends and family members to come to watch the race and root us on. That’s always a big boost. Also, having the Marsh Supermarkets folks supporting us this weekend is huge. We’ll be spending time with them at their headquarters and stores on Thursday. We’re looking forward to celebrating Saturday night by driving our Kleenex®/Marsh Ford into victory lane.”
