Sam's Town 250 - Memphis Motorsports Park
Harvick Races to Win Number Eight at Memphis
Kevin Harvick, who clinched the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series championship one race ago at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, put an exclamation point on his season with his eighth win of the year on Saturday.
arvick won the Sam’s Town 250 after a thrilling green-white-checker finish at Memphis Motorsports Park. It was his 25th career victory in the NASCAR Busch Series. Clint Bowyer was second followed by Carl Edwards in third and Johnny Sauter in fourth place. International racing star Juan Pablo Montoya finished 11th in his NASCAR debut.
A series of several caution flags slowed the second half of race, as Harvick, Johnny Sauter, Bowyer and Edwards raced for the lead in between yellow flags. Harvick and Bowyer were racing towards a 1-2 finish for Richard Childress Racing until Edwards moved in between the two teammates, in second place, with 22 laps remaining.
After the race’s 13th caution period, Edwards used the low side of the track to race underneath Harvick on the restart and into the lead on the next lap – just before a 14th caution began with 10 laps to go.
As Edwards and Harvick battled on the subsequent restart, Steven Wallace lost control of his car and touched the wall with four laps to go – bringing out the 15th caution of the day and setting up the green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Harvick and Bowyer both raced underneath Edwards to score the 1-2 finish for Richard Childress Racing.
Montoya, a former Indianapolis 500 winner, CART champion and Formula 1 driver, qualified ninth for his NASCAR debut and spent most of the first half of Saturday’s race in the top 10, before settling in for his 11th place finish.
Johnny Sauter Captures Pole at Memphis
Johnny Sauter won the NASCAR Busch Series pole position for today’s Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park. With new crew chief Bootie Barker, Sauter qualified in 22.763 seconds, at an average speed of 118.614 mph, to capture his fourth career Busch Pole and first of the season. The pole comes in his 173rd start in the NASCAR Busch Series. His most recent pole was at The Milwaukee Mile on June 25, 2005, where he also won the race. Sauter becomes the 16th different Busch Pole winner in 2006. Jason Keller, driving the No. 66 for Brewco Motorsports, qualified in the second position, while Shane Huffman will start third. Willie Allen put the No. 14 Dodge in the fourth starting spot, followed by Randy Lajoie, who qualified the No. 21 car for series champion Kevin Harvick.
