Auggie Earned a Respectable Finish at The Glen:
Auggie Vidovich entered Watkins Glen International for Saturday’s Zippo 200 without much experience driving a heavy, full-bodied stock car on a road course. However, he proved to have what it takes to race against NASCAR’s best and the road race “aces” after earning a respectable 21st place finish in his road course debut. On Saturday afternoon, qualifying took place in a “European-style” format with Vidovich going out first in the first group of cars. Stepping it up nearly eight-tenths from his best practice time, Vidovich paced the 2.45-mile course with a fast lap of 75.178 seconds at a speed of 117.322 miles per hour, claiming the 39th starting spot When the green flag flew, the action quickly lit up for the GEICO Racing team when Vidovich’s off-road racing skills were tested while battling for position with Jon Wood. The pair were racing side-by-side on lap 5 when Vidovich was forced off-track and into the grass. He was able to hang on to the GEICO Dodge and return to the racetrack, but he lost four spots. On lap seven, some of the lead lap cars began to pit. By lap 20, Vidovich had moved into the top-20. On a strategy all their own, the GEICO team kept Vidovich on track until the event’s first caution flag flew on lap 31 for a multi-car wreck in the inner loop. “We’re tight in the center of the corner,” said Vidovich to the crew just before he hit pit road for four tires and fuel on lap 32. Vidovich rejoined the field 25th and worked his way to 23rd before bringing the GEICO Dodge to pit road for the final stop of the day under the green flag on lap 49. The GEICO Crew outfitted their Dodge with four tires and fuel, returning Vidovich to the track 27th. When two cars spun in turn one bringing out the event’s second caution on lap 59, several cars hit pit road but the GEICO team stuck to their strategy and kept Vidovich out for track position. As the pit stops cycled through, Vidovich was 20th on the leader board. Sliding to 21st in the closing laps, Vidovich finished on the lead lap in his road course debut in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
